Something Wrong with Tennis says Safin

Safin says there with Fed and Rafa at top again

We know they won't likely be there much longer so what is wrong with some of the best players that ever held a racket running up the score a bit longer.  The men that can't yet beat them just don't have the requisite skills and experience yet to take them down in the big matches.  It is great for tennis to have these remarkable players stay around longer.  Safin apparently doesn't remember Rosewall and Laver player late into their thirties and Rosewall winning the big ones at age 37.

Rosewall Does and thinks Fed can keep it going a bit longer.

2018 Australian Open Tennis

When is it, who's involved, how to watch?

The Australian Open kicks off the 2018 season.  You can enjoy one of the Slams during the Winter season while the rest have to be played in Spring or Summer.

I've always loved the Aussie Open knowing that it was the home of the tennis boom of the 60's and 70's led by the Australians.  It has the benefit of a counter cyclical weather season that makes it ideal for January play while the rest of the outdoor Slams are in the cold.  It's coming soon.

Judy Murray on changes needed in men's tennis

Judy Murray

Avoiding injury is a big problem in all sports but in tennis, a solo sport, if you have an injury you're out of the game and if you have a tournament scheduled those missed matches will disappoint fans.

They should make it easier on men and women to work a shorter season without penalizing them.

Health: Mouthwash Raises Diabetes Risk

Mouthwash risk

They have been telling us that good dental hygiene will help protect your cardiovascular system but now one central component of good oral health has been studied and for now is considered bad.  What next, toothpaste?

The likelihood is that the alcohol in mouthwash is the culprit.  That might also mean drinking is no longer a good idea.  Oh wait, that hasn't been a good idea for a while unless you drink wine according to some studies but new studies will probably change that.

Health: Blood Pressure Guidelines

This doctor doesn't agree with the new guidelines.

Keep in mind that exercise might help you control your blood pressure more easily than some medications without the negative side effects.  Adding some control over your diet and you might be able to avoid the problems altogether.

Bottom line, play tennis, eat selectively, get more sleep, and cut your stress.

Nadal - Federer - extraterrestrial and tennis manic - both appear bionic

Nadal - extraterrestrial
I could agree with Magnus Norman on this and would add that a DNA check might prove he is an off planet arrival with superhuman abilities.

Federer - Tennis Manic
He's my kind of maniac then.  It's hard not to like a guy that keeps going, and going, and going.

My take on this combined feat of both of these incredible tennis players is that they do whatever it takes to keep winning and that includes having the mindset needed to adapt and overcome all obstacles.

We are lucky to have these two gentlemen at the top of our sport again.  They both set the standard for behavior and excellence unmatched in any other sport.  The two of them have remade tennis for the better.

Shot Clock Changes for Serving

New Changes to Professional Tennis

This may favor the player that has practiced assembly line style serving where a long preparation isn't necessary.  A few bounces of the ball on the court and boom, the serve should be on the way.  Twenty bounces probably won't cut it.  Most players will adapt.

Dimitrov and Newfound Mental Toughness

Dimitrov

It either comes with experience or not.  If not, you fall to the wayside so we should expect great things from Dimitrov in the coming years.

Becker - Bury Me at Wimbledon

Becker No longer feels German

I can't fault his desire to be interred at Wimbledon.  His choice of places to live and die at least have symmetry with his earlier successful life.

If there is one thing about Boris Becker we can all enjoy that is his aggressive and extreme way of approaching life to the fullest from tennis and partying to love.

Remembering Pancho Segura

Pancho Segura Dies at 96 - Washington Post
Another tennis great from the past has passed away.   He was the world Co-number-one in  1950 and 1951.

Segura Knows the Score
He was a master of tennis in knowledge, strategy, skill.  Self Taught.

Coached Jimmy Connors - Star Tribune
Segura was instrumental in the Connors success in 1974 at Wimbledon and the US Open where he crushed Ken Rosewall in both matches.  At Wimbledon in 1974 when Connors crushed Ken Rosewall in the final it was Segura who cheered and again at the US Open.  He predicted that Connors would become the King of Wimbledon and though not accurate completely he was an early cheerleader for Jimmy Connors as a force in tennis.   Connors later writes that he regrets pushing Segura out of his entourage.

Amazon Prime Video Now Includes ATP Tennis Matches

Amazon Prime ATP Matches

This is a great option for those who don't want to pay for the usual package of Sports programming and especially those who have cut the cord on cable TV.  If you have high speed Internet you can stream some great matches.  I hope this expands to include all tennis matches out there either as pay per view or as part of Free Prime Video.

Give it a try and I think you'll like it.  The first match was between Kharchanov and Medvedev.
It was excellent tennis.  I won't spoil the outcome for you by getting into match details but you should know that these guys are both strong enough players to make it an effort for the top ten players to beat them and also it is great to see new talent showcased in such a format.

It's a filthy racket

Tennis racket used to mash potatoes in London Bakery

I don't see a problem here if you remember how Jack Lemmon used a tennis racket to strain spaghetti in a movie titled The Apartment." 1960.

Video of scene

In the kitchen with Jack Lemmon tennis racket scene.

Of course that was a movie, and this sadly is a place where people bought food.

My recommendation is to use a real strainer and save your racket for tennis for something not involving food unless maybe you desire to use one as a serving tray with a liner to actually keep the food clean.

Fed vs Rafa on ATP World Tour Finals Surface
This article was supposedly a slam against Rafa by Fed but I didn't read it that way.  They are both putting forth their opinions and it seems that Fed was careful not to make it personal and neither did Rafa.  Let's not see a feud but rather a rivalry among gentlemen which is ideally what tennis represents.

This seems fair to me.  Rafa has a spotless record and is justified in making every effort to keep his reputation intact.

This book is about the challenge of becoming a caregiver.  How is this related to tennis.  Well, the author is a tennis teacher and found a way to use tennis teaching and playing to survive the rigors of emotional and physical stress that accompanies the task of being a caregiver for a parent.
