Arthritis

All about

If you are suffering from it or are an athlete you will eventually to some extent at least be aware of how to limit the risk and damage.

Limitations of the Mind

Most limits exist only in our minds

Self imposed limitations are the worst impediment of all and the harshest punishment.

If you have the desire to become a high level tennis player then you should accept the idea that you must put your mind as well as your body to the task.

R.I.P. - Ken Flach - Doubles Champion

Kenneth Eliot Flach (May 24, 1963 - March 12, 2018

The news came across the social networks among those of us who follow tennis and I found some stories in the foreign press.  Ken Flach passed away yesterday.  He was a great doubles player during his time in professional tennis.  I had the opportunity to watch him play at the Washington Star Tournament in Washington D.C. back in the 1980's.  As a team Flach and Seguso was masters of the doubles court and were a pleasure to watch.  Condolences to his family.

New Order in Women's Tennis

Serena?

This will be a test.

Vote: Greatest Tennis Rivalry

I pick Fed and Rafa for men.

I choose Martina and Chris for Women.

Tennis Contraptions you don't need

Contraptions

I never thought much of the various gimmicks and tennis devices I've seen.  Most fade away.  Stick with good rackets, shoes, tennis balls, and modern clothing that breathes and blocks sun.

You can do most of your training with a wall or a ball machine when you can't get a partner.

A ball basket is probably the best tool among all the other essentials of tennis.  You can do self feeds or drop and hit shots as well as just taking lots of serves.

Traction for format

As long as the main events stay close to the tradition it makes sense to experiment with ways to keep tennis in the forefront.

Injuries Rule the World of Sports - Tennis Most of All

There are no substitutions in Tennis unless you think of some of the team formats.  Mostly, you are on your own and if you get injured during a doubles match your team is still finished unless you can park yourself out there while your partner plays the match while you step in to serve and receive when your turn comes.

Del Potro Regrets - wrist injury left him as an also ran though he felt he could have gone head to head with both Rafa and Fed.

Djokovic - dropped from the top

Shattered Dreams for Murray and Djokovic

Overuse Injuries plague Tennis Stars

When it comes to playing tennis think of the long term.  If you over practice and over play you will eventually wear down your body and find more injuries.

Also, avoid activities that can lead to off court injuries because these will still follow you onto the court.

How to help prevent injures from becoming disabling.

Stop and treat an injury when it starts and don't wait until it becomes chronic.  Use whatever tools are available such as protective braces, tapes, and elastic bands.  Change your equipment to help protect yourself.  For instance, some rackets are better for bad elbows than others.

Use anti-inflammatory medications when needed to help reduce overuse injuries that are beginning to show up.

Work on defending your body against injuries by maintaining strength and flexibility.

This is an example of the high quality of character we have among most tennis players and though you see some charity in other sports this is often the norm in Tennis.  It helps set our sport apart.  You can do things as well simply by giving your time to coaching and bringing new players into the sport.  Seemingly selfish, you are instead giving many children an outlet that contributes to their health, safety, and moves them toward a stronger value system of respect for rules and behavior not found in many other sports.

Sunlight - Benefits and negatives
Tennis players get lots of sunlight so the best thing to do is protect your face and head most of all and if you have a choice wearing long sleeves in the modern synthetics can act as an SPF 30 protection so that you don't overdo it.

5 Worst Foods
Notice that tennis players eat a lot of pasta before a match, but that assumes they don't already have some insulin resistance.  If you do make sure to limit intake and balance it with fats and protein to slow metabolizing it to fast to avoid blood sugar spikes.  Another approach is to make sure that any pasta or breads you eat have high fiber content to also reduce the rate of conversion to blood sugar.

Bartoli to Return: Doing it for peace of mind

Bartoli

Despite what it took to get her back on the court, it makes me thankful that she has chosen to return.  Marion Bartoli was wonderful to watch in her intensity and fury of action out on the court.  Her practice swings in between points reminded me of a boxer that didn't want break between rounds but would rather go right back to fighting.

I hope she finds her peace back on the court.  It was sad to see her retire but understandable considering the achievement it marked as the capstone to her career.

Best Luck to Marion
