Wear and Tear for Teaching Pros: Arthritis and joint pain

This seems to be a recurring outcome for tennis pros with extended careers. Most of my contemporaries ended up selling real estate, building homes, or just managing a club with assistants handling the teaching load. It hit me almost ten years ago where there were days I dreaded heading to the courts. I love the tennis but my body didn't love the time on hard surfaces.

The only answer I know is to cut back hours on your feet. I know, easily said. and arthritis makes it worse. I use Aspercreme on my hips and knees when sleeping becomes a challenge. Gel shoe inserts help a lot and so do high end shoes like the Brooks Beast. I credit those shoes for keeping me on the court when I thought I was done. New Zealand Green Lipped Mussel extract, Fish oil, and other anti-inflammatory supplements help too.
