What appears to be the case is that no one ever really returns after hip surgery but maybe he will be the one.  My suggestion is to enjoy a healthy retirement after surgery and play the seniors tour when the time comes.  He can do exhibitions without hurting himself again.

My money is still on Djokovic in the Majors.  He won't make the preparation mistake again for those.
I will say though that seeing Federer win, or Nadal, and maybe even Murray at this stage of the competition is still satisfying.  I would like to see a few more Fed wins though and expect Novak to take more as well.  Nadal, well he's fighting injuries that will continue to plague his aggressive physical game.

Suggestion to Nadal:  Work on some new methods.  Serve and volley, more drops, and find a way to flatten the ball out some of the time to save energy.

Tennis News: Player Hits Umpire in Eye with Ball - Defaults Match

This is not only unfortunate for the Umpire but for the Canadian team to lose simply because one player on the team loses control.  It is justifiable to hand over a win to the other side.  An umpire shouldn't have to worry about being attacked.  An errant ball is one thing but this ball was hit when play was finished so whatever happens when you fire a ball off is your responsibility.

Competitors can learn from this.  Most of the time it goes beyond self control issues and it has to do with ego.  Some players act out as if to say they are better than what just transpired in the point.  As frustration builds some players resort to physical displays not much different than a tantrum.  It rarely helps though at times if the umpire doesn't act these displays will interfere with the match and distract an opponent.  In the 70's and 80's some of the players used antics as a form of gamesmanship to disrupt the match when they were losing.  Rule changes have made this less of a problem but actions like this cannot be managed.  The fine is justifiable as well.  Hopefully this players will fully learn from it.  It is apparent that he didn't purposely try to hit the umpire based on his reaction when he hit him but by then it was too late.

#1 rule.  When you hit a ball and send it downrange and it is not during a point whatever happens is on you.  During a point it can still be on you if you appear to purposely aim a ball at a linesman or referee and umpire while throwing away a point.

Australian Open - Federer defeats Nadal, Serena defeats Venus

Congratulations to both Roger and Serena.

Roger Federer beats Rafael Nadal giving him some arguments against the Nadal owns him narrative.  It also gives Roger some hope that he can take another Wimbledon.  The one thing that is certain is that every day of Roger Federer still in Professional tennis is a great day for those of us who love his game.  Rafael is another favorite just because of his style of play that invokes epic struggle in every point.  Sadly, his style of play is also hard on his body and this may be why his game seems to be fading from the amazing levels he once managed to reach.  Watching them play against each other is still one of the most enjoyable moments available for tennis spectators.

Serena Williams beats Venus Williams in another all sister final.  The outcome was expected based on past results.  Venus is a charming personality while her sister Serena is a dominant force of nature.  Aside from her physical strength which gives her a serious advantage against all other women players it is also her force of will that takes it across the finish line or in this case match point.

Winning the US Open in straight sets proves to me that Federer has found his game. The surface at the Open contributed to this of course, and his run for more slam titles is not over. He may never win a slam, but a long list of titles will solidify his position as one of the greatest in the game.

For students of the game, I would have to say that watching Federers feet move across the court, isolated from the rest of his game still gives you an idea of how effortless he makes the game look. He glides while others lunge.

His backhand and forehand are both superb but in the final even his volley began to take on the look of mastery.

Congratulations Roger, it was great to watch you play.

US Open 08 - Murray Defeats Nadal

This was a great match. I missed the first two sets yesterday, but was rewarded with a tremendous effort by both men today. I am pleased that Murray won with the interesting final it predicts, but found myself cheering for Nadal and sad when he was unable to hold back Murray's aggressive play. Nadal worked his usual 200% and it seemed as if Murray was unfazed by Nadal's speed or strength. As is was, Murray carried the power and regularly broke the rhythm with slice backhands and off-speed forehands. His angled two handed backhand was superb and remained a threat against Nadal throughout the match. He seemed to have an answer for any of Nadal's usual weapons and attacks.

Murray had a unique combination of one handed slice backhands to slow down the pace or for wide reaches, and his amazing two handed backhand. This is an area worth emulating for junior tennis players that want to build a long term weapon off of the backhand side.

I have a great respect for Nadal and his unbelievable sportsmanship. Many players that lose in such a hard fought and important match walk away bitterly and humilitated. Nadal showed none of these, but instead was gracious to Murray at the handshake and even spent time signing autographs.

Murray may have completed his breakthrough match that will give him future success in grand slam events.
