Court Safety - personal risk from threats - How to Cope

Unfortunately, being on a court is like being in a cage. I like courts with two exits or more. I've had mean and crazy dogs show up on the court. Choose the place you play or teach carefully for the social environment. Don't make enemies with locals and resolve disputes as peacefully as possible. Maybe they'll offer Kevlar racket bags soon. Finally, use situational awareness to see it coming. If your eyes and ears tell you something, believe it, meaning skedaddle.

Health: Your Feet, Chemicals in Water Threshold, Regrets - Mental health

Foot Health

This is a good article on keeping your feel in tone and strong for balance and safety.   The article suggests it's even the secret to a long life but aren't so many things according to the experts.  But we all have to walk so having your feet in tip top shape makes that happen.

Chemicals in Water Threshold Lowered for Safety

Life of Regret - how to avoid it.

This is great advice and what it ties into is your self image and what you expect of yourself.  If you don't match up to what you dreamed of doing and being or at least working toward it then yes you might feel failure and regret.  Relative to your dreams of a career in tennis many of us have had to make compromises.  In my own case a matter of injuries, finances, and reality of my existing options led me to choose teaching tennis as a life career.  Of course we all would love to play competitively for a living but I saw teaching as a way to stay with tennis throughout my life.  The reality is that a majority, a very big majority of those who tried to make a living playing end up teaching anyway.  Of course it does give you a leg up in terms of credentials to at least have played professionally even if not successfully enough to stay with it.  Think of this when you plan your future on the court and consider that everything you do is eventually leading you toward sharing your skills and what you have learned with others.  In the meantime enjoy every day on the court whether it's as a player or teacher.

Locker Room Health Risks

WebMD Locker Room Risks

Your Feet
I always considered the biggest risk athletes foot but nail infections are high on the list.  To protect against this and other risks to your feet wear shower shoes (flip flops), and make sure you sterilize them periodically.

Towels
I was once responsible for washing the towels as well as everything else at the clubs I worked at.  Soap, hot water, and a hot dryer seemed to do the trick for sterilization.  Never put out damp towels.  In today's risk environment I bring my own towels or shower at home or in my hotel room.

Water Burns
I've stepped into showers and had steaming hot water hit me when a toilet flushes in a locker room.  Just changes in water availability can cause an extreme change in temperatures so be ready to move as hot water can cause serious burns.  A blast of cold water can also be exciting.  I had that happen to me in an Army locker room where the water went from warm to freezing instantly.   It is great for getting up the heart rate but at least you don't suffer burns.

Hot Tubs / Whirlpools
I stay out of these.  I was a certified pool operator and ran the whirlpool in a club and saw the difficulty in keeping the balance between too much chlorine and a bacteria laden soup.  In such a small body of water with heat added to it the balance was very hard to maintain.  As a user, I only went in once over years of that option available to me.  Once I changed the filters and saw the accumulation of filth on them I decided to pass on the experience.
