Happy New Year - Play More Tennis

Set your New Year Resolution to spend more time out on the court and less time working or doing things you don't enjoy.

Find a way.

Eat a better diet to help you in your quest for health and better sports performance.

Plan to improve one aspect of your game more than others.  Choose something whether it's your serve or volley or backhand or forehand.  Don't try to improve all of them.  Pick one and solidify it and make it a weapon on the court.  This is one goal and resolution that you can carry and remember throughout the year.

5 tennis Drills

To improve your skills 5 drills

Racket Drills for Solo Training

Racket drills are those that help you improve your racket control and condition your arms not to mention your hand eye racket coordination and can be practiced without a court often only needing a flat surface.  You do these by yourself.

Check out my book Racket Drills for Tennis if you want a more complete understanding of racket drills.

Traditional Tennis Drills On Court

On Court drills often require a partner or a ball machine unless you self feed the ball.  Controlling the ball down the alley is an excellent way to learn to confine your targets to a small area on a straight line and thus you can learn precise directional control.

The International book of Tennis Drills is a good place to start.  If you have access to Kindle Unlimited you might check it out there.  Also, it has been in print for a while so you can get a much less expensive used copy that will do the job well.  Often you'll find that once you read a tennis drill book and learn the drills that you'll never go back to the book so I wouldn't spend a lot of money on a shelf sitter.

Rios Returns - Plans Comeback - Challengers Only

Rios

I think he's going to be shocked much like Borg and others that have tried to come back against the new crop of players even five years out much less fourteen.

It will be interesting to see if he again makes a whole bunch of new friends with his behavior.

If past is any prelude expect some fireworks.

Mary Hardwick - Tennis Racket

Wiki

20 April 1935 Story on Mary Hardwick - newspaper article

She was a classic stylist.

Story from the telegraph 2001

Here is a racket sold with an image and signature of Mary Hardwick.

This is a collectible Mary Hardwick tennis racket with an image of her and a signature on the frame. She played her professional tennis in the 1930's-40's and was from Britain. Her rackets were likely produced in that time all of the way up to the early 60's.   Most of the time racket endorsements disappear a decade or so after the player has left the professional ranks so that is how I am coming up with a time frame of when this might have been produced.

Mary Hardwick tennis racket Wilson Valiant

The grip is in excellent condition while the frame has signs of wear and chipping from storage.

The grip is 4 3/8 in size.

Auction starts at $11.  Buy it now for $15

Facebook Post from Justin Gimelstob

Health: Bread can be good for you,

Bread - the scientific case in favor of it.

Stay away from white bread and focus on whole grains.  That seems to be the consensus and a result of this study as well.  If you intend to live on the mediterranean diet this is one food source that is a major part of that diet, but those with whole grains.

Health: Lie to doctors study, 58% never do strengthening exercises

8 in 10 lie to the doctors  - study reveals why

58% never do strengthening exercises

Just a small set of dumbbells with a maximum weight of 20 pounds is a good way to help keep your upper body strong.  Avoid exercise at your own risk.  Even if you're a tennis player it helps to add weight training to your regimen.  Strength training doesn't require weights since you can do things like pushups, planks, and stretch bands to accomplish this but the best way is to include all of them.

'Tennis Going to Dogs - Retrieving Balls

Tennis Dogs

Except for the saliva they tend to leave on the balls this is a great idea.  I've tried it myself before except that most dogs want to chase any ball being sent back and forth.  I guess it takes special training to get them to sit and wait for the command to fetch.

Evonne Goolagong - Dunlop Tennis Racket

This is a Dunlop racket from Australia.  It is an Evonne Goolagong Signature Racket from the 1970's.

This racket is part of my collection.   They sell online for a little as $10 to as much as $100 depending on condition and place of manufacture.  This one was made in Australia making it more collectible than most especially in the United States.

Evonne Goolagong had a wonderful slice backhand along with a solid ground game and net game.  Her contemporaries were Chris Everett, Martina Navratilova,  Billie Jean King, and Margaret Court among others.

She had a very successful career with 14 Grand Slam titles and was a former world number 1 tennis player.
