Happy New Year - Play More Tennis

Set your New Year Resolution to spend more time out on the court and less time working or doing things you don't enjoy.

Find a way.

Eat a better diet to help you in your quest for health and better sports performance.

Plan to improve one aspect of your game more than others.  Choose something whether it's your serve or volley or backhand or forehand.  Don't try to improve all of them.  Pick one and solidify it and make it a weapon on the court.  This is one goal and resolution that you can carry and remember throughout the year.

5 tennis Drills

To improve your skills 5 drills

Racket Drills for Solo Training

Racket drills are those that help you improve your racket control and condition your arms not to mention your hand eye racket coordination and can be practiced without a court often only needing a flat surface.  You do these by yourself.

Check out my book Racket Drills for Tennis if you want a more complete understanding of racket drills.

Traditional Tennis Drills On Court

On Court drills often require a partner or a ball machine unless you self feed the ball.  Controlling the ball down the alley is an excellent way to learn to confine your targets to a small area on a straight line and thus you can learn precise directional control.

The International book of Tennis Drills is a good place to start.  If you have access to Kindle Unlimited you might check it out there.  Also, it has been in print for a while so you can get a much less expensive used copy that will do the job well.  Often you'll find that once you read a tennis drill book and learn the drills that you'll never go back to the book so I wouldn't spend a lot of money on a shelf sitter.

Rios

I think he's going to be shocked much like Borg and others that have tried to come back against the new crop of players even five years out much less fourteen.

It will be interesting to see if he again makes a whole bunch of new friends with his behavior.

If past is any prelude expect some fireworks.

Mary Hardwick - Tennis Racket

Wiki

20 April 1935 Story on Mary Hardwick - newspaper article

She was a classic stylist.

Story from the telegraph 2001

Here is a racket sold with an image and signature of Mary Hardwick.

This is a collectible Mary Hardwick tennis racket with an image of her and a signature on the frame. She played her professional tennis in the 1930's-40's and was from Britain. Her rackets were likely produced in that time all of the way up to the early 60's.   Most of the time racket endorsements disappear a decade or so after the player has left the professional ranks so that is how I am coming up with a time frame of when this might have been produced.

The grip is in excellent condition while the frame has signs of wear and chipping from storage.

The grip is 4 3/8 in size.

8 in 10 lie to the doctors  - study reveals why

58% never do strengthening exercises

Just a small set of dumbbells with a maximum weight of 20 pounds is a good way to help keep your upper body strong.  Avoid exercise at your own risk.  Even if you're a tennis player it helps to add weight training to your regimen.  Strength training doesn't require weights since you can do things like pushups, planks, and stretch bands to accomplish this but the best way is to include all of them.

Evonne Goolagong had a wonderful slice backhand along with a solid ground game and net game.  Her contemporaries were Chris Everett, Martina Navratilova,  Billie Jean King, and Margaret Court among others.

She had a very successful career with 14 Grand Slam titles and was a former world number 1 tennis player.

Towels in Pro Tennis: Zverev has an opinion, Towel Racks Milan

Zverev -Towel habits can be ridiculous

He is right.  It's all new and before long they'll add tying player's shoes to the ball boy duties.  It seem in some cases they are already set up to be used as verbal punching bags when a player needs to blame their own problems on someone else.

Here is another option.  How about just having a drone fly in after each point as needed?  The player could have a wrist controller or a button on their racket for ordering it up along with a banana, slice of pizza, or how about a shot of B-12.

But then again it wouldn't be long before a player smashed the drone with a racket for not coming or leaving fast enough.

Zverev has a good point.  Put some racks out and let them do it themselves.

The Federer Serve - Why You Should Emulate it.

Fed Serve Analysis - Yandell

If you look at his serve you'll see an economy of motion absent use of physical strength but rather timing to get the job done.  It is precision clockwork on a biological level.

Strategy Making Accuracy

Think first about what appears to be his greatest serve strength and that is his precision.  He can aim the ball and put it where he wants it to go.  The ability to do this allows for a strategy of keeping your opponent off balance and forcing them to return the ball to a predetermined location.   Well placed, his serve can often set him up for the follow on shot mid-court or as a volley if he chooses to slip into the net.  One very useful benefit of accuracy in a serve is that it rarely falls off even as your energy flags and velocity and spin abate when the arms and legs tire.  He can still find his targets and this makes him dangerous on first and second serves.

Moderate Toss Height

By keeping his toss apogee (maximum height) close to the contact point of his serve is compact enough to avoid a slow delivery that is often the bane of big servers.  The longer the ball hangs in the air the more speed it picks up on the fall from it's high toss position and the more likely there will be a timing error especially if the legs tire and the serve rhythm slows.  Additionally, the more drop in the toss after the ball reaches maximum height  the more vulnerable it is to lateral movement from the wind.  Simply, Fed's serve is wind resistant more than most.  Though he doesn't have a high speed rushed delivery that can confuse and hurry an opponent, neither does he hang around with it.   If you want an abbreviated delivery that goes straight to the trophy pose then check out Rafa as an example.

Rhythm and Fluidity

This of course is where it becomes obvious that the Fed serve is something special since it appears effortless and almost disappears into the mundane.  He makes it look easy to the point of it seeming no different than a person walking might appear.  Rarely do you comment on a normal walking gait but only when it has some movements and pace that are outliers.  The advantage of having perfect rhythm and fluidity is that you gain free energy that translates into racket speed since there is little energy loss and some actual gain to be found in continuity of motion that the abbreviated motions miss.  One more thing too is that it is aesthetically more pleasing to watch so you'll impress spectators with your grace.  That's not something to work toward but it explains the fascination with the actual beauty of Fed's game overall that includes his serve.

Copy Fed

If you want a Fed like serve then you should begin by regular practice that includes going out daily to hit two buckets of serves.  Practice your targeting skills more than how hard you hit the ball.  Watch the Fed serve on video and see if you can mimic the timing and motion.  Look for initially just the toss height and location, and the down-up-down timing of his arms as they work in unison.  As for the grip, I'd at a minimum go with a continental grip and over time see if you can edge toward an Eastern Backhand grip when you hit slice or kick serves.

Tennis Elbow Cures Proven Ineffective

Tennis Elbow

I've gotten tennis elbow in my non-dominant arm when shoveling snow.  It goes away if you don't repeat the movement for a long while so it's usually gone by the next time it snows.  Tennis players with elbow pain have another problem which is that they want to continue playing tennis.  That unfortunately is the one thing they should avoid if it has become severe.

Here are some ideas.

First seek professional medical advice.  The ideas below are only augmentative to helping you to keep playing if your doctor agrees to it.

Tendonitis Elbow Brace

Armbands do help cut pain.  Look for one that places pressure on the muscle in one place rather than one that covers a whole area.  Here is an example.

Switch to a Two handed Backhand

If you are a one handed backhand player there is a good chance you caused the injury hitting backhands so it might be time to start working on a two handed backhand.  Technique is often the problem with a one handed backhand elbow injury but once injured even a change in form won't help until you've recovered.  A switch to a two hander can often eliminate any shock coming to your dominant arm where you have the injury

Slice Backhand

If you have a one handed backhand and want to stay with it you might try working on a slice backhand since it tends to deliver less shock to the arm.

Flexible Racket

The best way to cut your pain aside from not playing is to find a flexible racket with a stiffness rating below 60 if possible.  There are plenty of them out there if you research it.  I'd look at one in the 56 range.   Here is one of my favorites.

Low Shock Stringing

Reduce your string tension to the minimum and stay away from poly.  If you can afford it use gut or at least a gut and synthetic gut hybrid with the mains strung in gut.  I'd limit tension to no more than 55 pounds depending of course on the type of frame you use.

Change your Serve

If you have a two handed backhand the chance is that your elbow problems may originate with your serve.  Many players cause a problem by using a slice serve with the wrong grip and trying to get excessive wrist snap.  Make sure you're using a continental grip or an eastern backhand grip versus an eastern forehand grip when serving with slice.  Also, allow your finish to complete on the opposite side of your body so that you aren't putting stress on your arm to stop the follow through.

Try Cold and Heat

I found ice packs and heat pads offer some relief.  Often I alternate.

Anti-Inflammatory

Of course this is what the standard suggestion is and the problem is that if you keep playing they won't help much plus they can be tough on your stomach.

Cream

I've found some pain reduction creams do help for joint pain.

My favorite is Aspercreme.  You can find it inexpensively at your local department store in the pharmacy section.

The best thing for protecting your arm from further elbow injury is to stop doing the thing that caused the injury.  Once you determine that you can change and avoid it and begin to heal.  What you never want to do is to get to the point of having to give up the game if possible.  It's better to learn a whole new way to play than to lose it due to a repetitive use injury like tennis elbow.

Best of luck in your recovery.

Success - a great definition - Tennis Players Take Note

"There is only one success … to be able to spend your life in your own way."   Christopher Morley

I love this idea because it rings true. Choose your life rather than let others decide for you. I chose tennis first and last and it's given me many years of happiness.

If tennis also moves you then here are some ideas.

Competition

If you want to play professionally then you have your work cut out for you and if you haven't reached it by your mid 20's it is likely you never will.  Even if you do you should plan on coaching as your follow on career if you never make your mark as a household name or earn enough beyond paying your bills to set your future in comfort.  The odds are against you in this.

Acquiring Tennis Knowledge

Knowing all this you really should hone your teaching and coaching skills at the same time you progress as a player.  Read all you can on the subject of tennis so you'll have a strong background in the history and overall general knowledge of the game.

Master Your Craft

Study all you can on coaching and teaching tennis so that you can self coach and later help others achieve their dreams on the court whether that means U.S.T.A. leagues, amateur tournaments, or professional play.

Reading, watching tennis instruction videos, and watching tennis matches will help you master your craft and part of your goal as a Tennis Lifer is to know and understand as much as possible about this wonderful pastime and avocation.

Share Your Knowledge

If you love this sport it should be an easy decision for you to teach others and share your knowledge either for your way of making a living or as a volunteer.

Enjoy Your Time

Play as often as you like and find a practice partner that makes your time on the court fun.  Avoid stressful circumstances like competition if you are now past that phase of your tennis career.  Just enjoy hitting balls and focus on your own precision.

Fed News: Davenport - Federer has made this huge change to tennis, Ripped for Going Against Code, Federer Major injury concern

Lindsay

It is great to see that players with better attitudes are generally the ones at the top as compared to some from earlier times.  Bad behavior isn't good for the sport.

Federer Ripped for Going Against Sport Code

He could have said it before the tournament and then been accused of using it as a sympathy ploy.  You really can't win with the press.  In this case the truth always carries the day.  If I were playing Fed and he said he was injured afterward I'd just claim that I was too.  If I was and won so much the better.  The fact is that beating Fed under any conditions is a great win for Anderson.

The Fed Forehand - On The Rise

If I could describe the Fed Forehand in only three words I'd Say "On The Rise."

I'd say this because you see many of the very best players hitting it on the fall long after it reached the apex or with their severe Western grips they actually play it at the apex, the highest point.

Here is John Yandell in his superb analysis of the Fed Forehand.

Yandell at Tennisplayer.net

In the end what you gain by emulating the Fed way is to stay close to the baseline and play everything early thereby cutting the angle of travel and increasing your angle by being closer to the net.  It also allows you to effectively speed up your shots by shortening the time it takes it back to your opponent.

Congratulations to Namoi Osaka - Champion of the 2018 U.S. Open

Naomi Osaka Strikes Gold at U.S. Open

Congratulations to Naomi Osaka.  She played exceptionally well.  She had to.

Why You Should Keep Your Cool in Matches - Serena Williams U.S. Open 2018

I'll leave you to decide who is right or wrong in this outcome between a player and the Chair Umpire.

Serena at U.S. Open Final 2018

After reading the article I'd like you to also find the video of the exchange and see that no matter what else happened it is clear that once Serena lost her focus on play that she had no chance of winning.  Naomi played superbly and it is very likely that she would have won anyway and that part of the issue was that Serena extends her unhappiness with losing to her behavior that often goes against the rules of tennis behavior in tournaments.

The Chair Rules

The question of her coach giving signals in the stands is hard to define as an infraction and I really wonder if it shouldn't be done away with altogether.  I don't know from what I saw if the umpire made the right call on that or not.

From there though, racket abuse is clearly an infraction and once the first warning was given Serena had to know it might cost her a point which it did.  That really set her off and rather than bearing down and going for a win she turned her ire toward the umpire which in my opinion was not only regrettable but cost her dearly.  In modern sports and especially tennis there is nothing to gain from arguing and in this case abusing the chair umpire.  He kept cool up there and after one harangue after another aimed at him he took a game from her and he is probably safe for having done it.

Keep Your Cool

This match and the outcome is a clear example why learning to tame your emotions in a match and focusing on the task at hand is more important than acting out against perceived injustices.  You have to realize that if an umpire is doing things against you that probably you can do nothing positive about it by raising a big fuss.  It won't help you win unless somehow it distracts your opponent and then by actions you are using gamesmanship, something Nastase was a master of doing to help break down an opponent's concentration.  He among others back in the annals of tennis history in the 70's is why these new rules for behavior are in place.  We ended up here because of poor behavior from the past.  It took away from the sport where tennis became secondary and the antics became what you remembered. So it was at the 2018 women's U.S. Open final.

Other players this year have acted out and have paid with lost points, games, matches, and fines.  In the end you'll notice that the happiest and most successful players are the ones with fewer battles with officials.

The Rafa Diet to stay Ripped

Rafa Diet

This information conforms to the best advice for dietary intake in general.  He obviously knows what works for him but this diet can work for you if you are looking for health and weight control.  Always watch the carbs as he suggests and olive oil and fish are safe forms of fat intake.  Here is to hoping that Rafa lives to 100+ and finds a way to play tennis into his late 90's.

Final Prediction: Novak Djokovic over Del Potro in 4 Sets

That's my prediction for the men's final at the U.S. Open Tennis Championships.

Women's Final

For the Women's Final I expect Serena to win but can't predict what Osaka might do to get past her.  If I were to give her advice I'd suggest not to outpower her but rather play cat and mouse with spins and off speed action.  The big question is if she can get Serena's serve back and also whether she can add enough variation on her serve to prevent Serena from attacking as she always does.   It rarely works to try out hitting Serena.

Wet Tennis

I sympathize with him.  Anyone who actually put themselves outside and worked in the Northeast or Mid Atlantic in the last few weeks has felt the wrath of humidity and heat combined.  It can be brutal and as we age our conditioning suffers just as a circulation drops off.

Be careful in this weather.  In these 100 degree Fahrenheit  heat index days it can be lethal and at least make you very weak and sick.  I've  made the mistake myself of submitting myself to this punishment and took days to recover.

Fed must hate day matches in NY in this kind of weather and even a night match is a grueling challenge with high humidity added to the heat.

Be careful and consider your age and conditioning since heat exhaustion and heat stroke are no laughing matter.

Hybrid Racket Stringing for Great Feel and Control - Gut and Synthetic Gut

I used to be a purist and either stayed with gut or high grade nylon but had never tried the mix.  A few years ago after realizing that my gut breakage was getting out of control during the stringing process I decided to change things.

Getting Crossed Up

The problem was not on the mains.  Running gut that way is easy but I am using heavy gauge gut for durability and savings.  My choice is  Babolat Tonic+ Natural Gut 15L.  I kept breaking the string while doing the crosses because fishing two pieces of heavy gauge gut through a modern frame hole at one of the junctures required using an awl.  I found that the hole size might be the same as the old wood frames, maybe, but there is no give like wood offered.   So rather than creating some space in a wood hole the hard synthetic frame of a racket meant that I was just crushing string.  I was breaking the gut on the mains while stringing or shortly after I began play because I was grooving and crushing the gut mains with the awl.  Solution - Gut for mains and synthetic gut for crosses.  It's easy to fish synthetic past a gut main in a juncture hole without the need for using an awl or at least not over-using it.

Focus on the Mains for Control

If you look at the frame and visualize how the ball strikes it and the path of your swing you'll see that the mains do the grabbing and the crosses act as the support like trampoline.   The mains run opposite of the racket face across the ball and therefore present the frictional and rotational impediment to the ball and so impart the spin while the crosses run in the same direction as the racket face path across the ball.

The crosses simply hold the mains in place, though I'll admit if I used an abrasive string on the crosses as well it would also help with grabbing the ball for imparting spin but with gut on the mains my primary concern is not damaging the gut so I want relatively smooth crosses.  This is telling when you have loose mains that move too much where the crosses rarely move.   I want a string on the mains that has enough texture to allow me to get all the spin I'm entitled to without high tension.

So here is my solution that has worked out perfectly.    String the mains with thick gauge gut at a tension that will initially seem taut but when the usual relaxation of tension comes with use and time it will drop right into the perfect control range.  So if I like a 50lb feel I string it at 55 lbs and within a few weeks of mild use and sitting it works down to an ideal tension.

What to use on the Crosses

The crosses are another question.  I tend to use 16 gauge crosses with high grade synthetic gut to again maintain longevity and look toward a solid platform for the gut strings to do their magic.

On my first attempt I used some 30 year old Prince Synthetic that I had plenty of from my days of outdoor teaching that required a great string not subject to moisture.  This or a string like this is my normal cross string.  It works.  It holds tension well enough.  I string the crosses a few pounds lighter than the mains because the stretching seems to be much less pronounced.  Also, the working strings for me are the mains and they need to grab the ball for spin so I want some tension and less movement.

Longevity as a side benefit

One more great benefit of a non-abrasive nylon cross string is that the wear of the gut strings at each crossover is almost non existent and instead the wear is focused on where the ball contacts the strings.  I get a whole season out of a set of gut now where before I'd get a month or two.

If you like playing with gut but not the price or misery of early breakage you might try a good hybrid combination.  One concern is that your mains need to be in the 20' range to get two string jobs out of one set of gut.  You can also buy half sets of Babolat gut that are 20' in length.

Regarding this Article

This is my own version of how things work and maybe you'll find a different take from the string masters out there though I have been stringing rackets since the 70's it's not my main effort and I haven't pretended to keep up on all of the new research into string interactions with the tennis  balls.   Based on my results and the fact that I am older and don't want a case of tennis elbow I think gut offers the spin and control options that might only be available in a hard on the arm synthetic strung at higher tensions.  Therefore consider this advice as specific to solving those problems.  If you come up with any other great solution please share it in the comment section.

The exercise part is simple.  Stay on the tennis court as long as you can.  As for diet and vices you'll have to decide those by accepting the tradeoff of pleasure versus less time turf-side.

Money and Happiness - How it relates to Tennis

New Study from Sweden on Money and Life Satisfaction

I read the story and somehow think it tells me as much about Swedes as it does about lottery winners.  Here is my take on how money can improve life satisfaction.

Were I to win the lottery right now my primary concern would be to find the ideal place to live out my life on the tennis court.  I might take a few trips as I have done recently to scope out some nice tennis locations.  But of course much of what you need to know is out there on the web.

Rather, I'd look at likely places after reading about them and visit and maybe even stay a while or even a long while.  It's amazing what you can do when you have the time to do it and aren't fettered by work.

Find a place that supports your values and preferred lifestyle and for me that wouldn't be the fanciest or richest place to live but rather a place where I can do what I've always done and that is to enjoy tennis year round when possible with moderate competition and more importantly a place not barren of tennis courts and players.

I've lived in places, not long usually, where there were either none or poorly maintained courts say for instance  the West Virginia Mountains.  It's just not generally part of the culture for a variety of reasons.  I'm sure there are a few resorts where you can enjoy it but not in general and there are many more places across the USA like that just like there are in the rest of the world.  Sure you can try to create it but it isn't easy and it has to become an obsession to actually get things started in  a place where none exists.

So look for  a place where life is easy and for me that includes courts.  But courts alone won't do it unless maybe you have a backboard too since if there are no or few players then you will be resigned to wall hitting or just self feeding drills and hitting serves unless you want to buy a battery powered ball machine.

So back to the original idea, I'd search around and find a place where I could get up in the morning knowing that a few hours of each day on the tennis court are on my schedule.  Later, maybe some golf or fishing might be nice, but the tennis is what I would want.

Since you're reading this on a tennis blog then of course you can understand why this is my focus.  If you have something else more important to you then focus on that and where to live to enjoy that life.  It seems to me it's as simple as that.

Best luck on your journey, rich or not.

Depression: Who finds a way to stay depressed?

Who

They did mention staying in the house or shutting yourself in.  If you want a twofer for working against depression get some sun and exercise at the same time on the tennis court.  If you can find a friendly partner this adds in a social outlet.

Health Risks of Outdoor Sports: Lyme Disease and Tennis, Glyphosate

Lyme Risk

If you think of tennis you imagine how can there be risk of Lyme out there on the court.  Truthfully, probably very little but surrounding those courts you often have grassy areas or woods that can hide the menace of ticks.  Go out there to retrieve a ball and you might have just picked up the vector parasite that can infect you with a list of bacterial infections that can become severe health problems if not treated.

Advice:  When retrieving balls in the grass or woods always do an immediate tick check on your legs and clothes.  There are times and places where I won't even retrieve a ball knowing that the risk of picking up either a tick or a poison ivy rash outweigh the cost of a lost practice ball.  I suggest the same.

If you do find a tick and it is moving then you should be fine in just removing it.  If it has attached then move stringent measures are needed and rather than go into these here I suggest that you look online for further information.

It is quite serious so I suggest you consider the risk when retrieving balls and also if you find a tick attached and remove it.

Glyphosate exposure from treated areas near courts.

Whatever you do try to make sure you aren't around when they are spraying it so that you don't inhale the fumes or that you near it while it dries and evaporates.  Even tennis balls that end up in treated areas can be a source of exposure.  It's hard to say how dangerous the risk is but if you have a choice avoid exposure for your long term health.

Vitas Gerulaitis

I'm putting my Vitas Gerulaitis Autograph Wood Racket up for sale for those who are collectors.  This is a standard wood frame with a printed autograph.  It's not actually signed by him.

Below is a little background on Vitas.

If you want to learn more about Vitas here is the wiki link.

ATP

For those who never saw him play I can tell you that he had a classic game that was smooth, graceful, and aggressive.  He happened to be a top player when some of the best players that ever lived were dominating tennis so his record isn't as exceptional as it might appear, but he faced Jimmy Conners, Bjorn Borg, John McEnroe, and Nastase to name a few.  It was as tough a time to try to stay in the top tier as it is now.

Movie Review: Borg VS McEnroe

I finally got around to watching this movie.  It is a well done and the effort to find actors that look like the players is amazing especially in the case of Borg.  Assuming that the storyline is based on truthful events I did learn some things that I didn't know.  First, I didn't know Borg had a temper on the court that he eventually brought under control to the extent he was known as the iceman.  I didn't know that Borg ran into Mac at the airport shortly after Wimbledon and they spoke.  If true, this also explains how they became friends over time.

If you are a tennis enthusiast then it is mandatory to eventually see this movie.  It helps fill in some gaps in what may have happened behind the scenes.  Even those of us that followed things closely and read about events as well will find something new.   On top of all of this I find it a very entertaining movie.
