What could Federer have done against Nadal?

What if the Federer versus Nadal rivalry that ended up with Nadal as the leader could be changed.

Bias:  I have been a Roger Federer fan though over time I have learned to love the heart Nadal puts in to his game if not his style.   That said.  If I could have given Roger the means to equal the match with Rafa I would have done so if for no other reason than the selfish need to see one epic match after another.

A rear mirror view of the reasons Rafa dominated Fed on a one to one basis in matches.

This is a look in hindsight though many years I wondered if Fed had done something with his backhand whether he could have blunted the Nadal attack on this one area of weakness relative to the rest of his game.  The problem with having any vulnerability is that once your opponent learns to exploit it like Rafa did with those high bounding topspin balls to Fed's backhand it became a primary focus on the match between them.  To compensate, Fed had to make his forehand even more aggressive and to run around the backhand at every chance.  When he did play the high one hander backhand shots they rarely did damage and the only time he caused Rafa trouble is when he would chip the ball for angles.  Going for big forehands was something Fed could do but it often put him out of position if he didn't hit the perfect shot.

What could Federer have done?

I've thought about this for years.  Aside from tactical changes such as moving in as early as possible to take the ball on the rise there weren't many options for Fed.

He could have worked on a driving chip backhand.

Imagine this.  Fed calls up Ken Rosewall and asks him to secretly train him on the chip backhand to bring it up to the level of precision and depth that Rosewall developed.    He could have passed his visits off to Ken as social, and meanwhile made this a one or two year project to make is backhand a weapon of unsurpassed versatility.  It may have worked though in truth I think it would have still been more vulnerable than other options that I have secretly dreamed of seeing Fed undertake.

He could have gone for serve-and-volley and chip-and-charge net play.

I wondered if he could have pulled this off with the changes in equipment.  Another factor is that his injury rate might have gone up thus negating any benefit.  Still, I think he held the talent to bring back a style that had over the past two decades all but disappeared.  The method of getting there would have been for him to take up playing doubles.  He should have picked up Sampras as a partner to get the full view of how such a dominant game could be played.

I will write this about Roger as a admirer of his game and the classic style.

Here is the heresy.
Roger with a two handed backhand.

Picture one match, on one day, where Roger comes up against his nemesis, Rafa Nadal.  The match begins and Rafa takes to his usual pattern in high bounding topspin balls to the Fed backhand.  Instead of lightly timing the shot and trying to redirect it with his one hander Fed grabs the racket with two hands, steps in  and crushes the ball in a fashion reminiscent of  Agassi or Connors, or maybe nowadays Novak.  The shock value alone would cause Rafa some second looks but just as importantly it would alter the years worn path of every match they have played.  The announcers in the booth would be in awe and though initially speechless, would wonder if they had just witnessed.  Now here is the rest of the story.

Codename: Double Fist

Two years prior Roger decides to embark on a secret program to add one more weapon to his already magnificent arsenal.  He calls up Jimmy Connors to meet for a game and some dinner and to ask him a favor. Over dinner he says to Connors, "Jimmy, I want you to teach me in secret how to hit a two handed backhand as you did.  I am sick and tired of getting the Borg treatment from Rafa and I want him to fear my backhand like everyone did yours."

Connors smirks at him and says, " you know I often wondered if I had your forehand and serve and my backhand how many more championships I would have won.  Of course I will if you let me know the day you plan to unleash it so I can be there.  I have nothing against Rafa but let's face it, he is taking away my reputation as the number one hustler and fighter out on the court and I want to see him dropped down a notch or two."

Two years later and many secret matches later Fed has his backhand ready.  He had Gimelstob feign the Rafa high bounder against his backhand for many nights in  Dubai.

So it's two games into the match and Fed is waiting to return a serve from Rafa and no one particularly notices that he is double fisting his now extended grip.  The serve goes to the backhand and he steps forward and crushes it straight back at Rafa who was expecting one of those smooth but not so damaging one handed works of art.  Instead he sees a body swing with the full weight of Fed that sends the ball back at an extra 30 mph giving Rafa no time.  Fed follows up with a point ending forehand from the weak play off the return.  The following points are an attempted replay by Rafa of his usual bounders but Roger is no longer running around his backhand and is instead jumping all over the ball.  It is eerily reminiscent of somebody from the early days but the game announcers can't put their finger on it.  Instead they talk about how it seems to work as well as Novak's.  Connors is in the stands listening to this through his headphone and smiles knowing that he is again back in the game by handing his sword to Fed.

If ?

Well, of course it may be too late for this now unless Fed wants to try this on the Champions tour when he faces Rafa and the rest of them.  I suggest that he try it simply to prove that he could have done this as the Maestro of tennis and changed everything but for the idea.  I know, it is offensive to the artistic senses but this to me is the tennis version of fantasy football.  I can dream can't I?

30 Years Later the 6 Hour Plus Match Between Mac and Mats

Mac reflects on the davis cup match between Mats and Mac

I watched this match.  During breaks I went for food but I stuck with the whole match and watched it to the finish.  It was epic and I did gain respect for Mac on that day that I didn't have before.  Needless to say, I will never forget that one.

Rod Laver Back in Australia

Catching up with some old mates.

Rod Laver audio interview.
This is a great chance to find out some things about Laver's career and how professional tennis was played back in the 60's.

Rod Laver is promoting his new book.  His memoir.
Tennis fans should consider this a must read to learn some things about the sport from a man who may still be seen as the best ever in the sport though Federer has made his own claim to that spot.  2 grand slams though are hard to argue against since it means you are a master of all surfaces.

Tennis for Troops at Joint Base Andrews

I came across this story and found it interesting since it is at Andrews AFB or Joint Base Andrews as it has been dubbed recently.

It is a nice idea to give the troops something that in general with military pay they would probably not be able to afford.  Of course I wonder if the Military Brass gets preference.

Check it out.

Seniors of Tennis Staying in the Game at the US Open

If you are over 30 in the open draw at the US Open you qualify as a senior in my mind.  Here are a few uplifting stories about the veterans of many on court battles staying for another season.

Hantuchova into Quarter Finals
This is the way to hang on and show them you are much more than a pretty face.

Youzhny into Quarter Finals
He is always intense and sometimes explosive but never fails to give everything.

Ferrer into Quarter Finals
Here is one of my favorite players to watch for his intensity and unbelievable tenacity.

U.S. Open Fans Unhappy About Security Lines

New security protocols at U.S. Open Tennis Tournament cause long waits.

I wouldn't be happy about a 2 hour wait either but apparently the limited planning for large groups trying to enter the grounds has made visiting the Open an experience close to that of going to the airport.  I'm glad I went there before all this started.  Nowadays, I'm content to watch the matches on TV just to avoid the crowds and miserable cab rides in NYC.

Federer Struggles

It is hard to watch this at times but age catches up with everyone.

Fed Loses to another player he shouldn't have lost to.

Fed has a hard day in Hamburg

Can a new racket cause you to lose.  Fed doesn't use it as an excuse.

Anyone with considerable skill knows that a racket can change your manner of play or results if you try to maintain your style.  The stiffness, balance, weight, and head size are variables on a tennis racket that can alter your game for the positive or negative.  I'd give it some time to see if the move to the larger racket head works for Federer.  It should give him more power for less work and as he ages that is a good thing.  I never thought I'd see Fed with a granny stick.

Ektelon Stringing Machine Upgrade Kit Review

I have had an original Model C Ekteleon stringing machine for over 30 years with no upgrades.   I somehow got by stringing my own rackets but avoided stringing rackets for friends based on the limitations of the old design meant for much smaller wood rackets.

I finally decided to get an upgrade kit for my machine so I could make it an easier job of stringing my own Head Radical OS frames.  I have enough floating clamps/speed clamps to accompany my fixed clamps so I didn't go for the clamp upgrade kit yet, though after trying the two point mount upgrade kit and seeing how well it works I may try that as well.

I received the 2 point mount kit today and found the installation very easy and quick.  I got it done in less than 30 minutes without stress or aggravation.

Once complete I went right to stringing my Head Racket and found it was now possible to pull tension on all of the center strings where before I was forced to pull two strings at once on the first four strings making the job less than ideal, and thus I only would string my own frames.  Some frames may still require a two string pull but the added frame support still makes this upgrade a good move.

It works very well and is clearly a very high quality product that is well thought out.  The much wider mounts also are more secure which should reduce stress on oversized frames.  If you have an old Ektelon I think this is a great investment especially when compared to buying a new machine.

Here is the link for the upgrade two point mount kit I purchased and it is designed to work with C,D, and DE models made by Ektelon.

2 point mount upgrade kit.

Another important thing to know is that the seller is very professional and handles the order promptly with tracking information sent once the items are shipped.

Tennis is a Sport for Life

79 Year Old Says You Can Play Into Your 90's Easily

I love these stories and I can remember  few of my own that I've witnessed.  I had a friend named Rufus who played tennis into his 90's.  One day I didn't see him on the court any longer and I knew he was gone because there was simply no way he would stop playing otherwise.

The USTA Tournament Categories go up to age 90 and over.

It is almost never to late to get into the game.  I've had students in their 70's and a few in the 80's.  I've got one right now that is 87 years old.

Get started.

Andy Murray Earned It

I have to say that he earned this one.  This was a struggle and the last game was fantastic.

Murray vs Djokovic

If Murray is ever to win this this should be his year.  The stars are aligned for him in terms of momentum.  Djokovic had a tough 5 setter against Del Potro and this should be a help for Murray.

2 All Games

9:43 Murray has to step it up and be aggressive.

9:45 Djokovic up 3 to 2 - Murray tentative.

9:49  3 All - Murray holds serve by serving well and taking the initiative.

9:53  Murray breaks Djokovic serve at love.  Djokovic temporarily rattled.

9:56  Murray double faults love 30, it goes to deuce, bad line call,

10:05 Long game and Murray saves a break and now goes to AD and takes game on a Djokovic error.

10:06  Djokovic serving make  weak angled volley that was telegraphed to Murray who runs it down and angles it past him.  Novak double faults to love 30 and Murray loses a chance to be up 40 in the game.  A bad net shot gives Novak the edge but a slip on the court coming up to the net to volley brings it back to deuce.  Novak holds.   Murray up and serving 5 to 4 first set.

10:15 Murray wins final serve game of the first set at love.  If Djokovic stays at this level and Murray does as well it may be a win for Murray.  Djokovic has to raise his level.

It is easier to type Novak than Djokovic so from now forward I will type a first name for this.

Murray Wins The First Set 6 to 4

10:40 Novak breaks and is up 3 to 1 second set.  Novak up 4 to 1.

11:24  Murray breaks back and wins the second set.  Sorry I was enthralled by the points and couldn't spend time writing about the match and each point.

11:25  Murray Wins the Second Set 7 to 5

12:11  Murray bring it to 5 to 4 all with a serve break.  He will serve for the match.  Amazing.  I think he earned it if it goes his way.

12:12 Murray serves for the match.

First point Novak hits a shot long.

Murray 1st serve fault.  Murray wins point on a Novak drop shot.

30 Love Murray Serving

Wimbledon 2013

Wow.  What a week this was to see so many great players go down from either injury or defeat.

Update:  Bartoli Wins  Against Lisicki- No Surprise after her demonstration against Flipkens.
Saturday 9am Lisicki vs Bartoli
Lisicki Beats Radwanska to get in final and for a time it looked like she didn't want to win it.
Bartoli beat Flipkens in a pure demonstration of power and will.

Sunday 9am Djokovic vs Murray
If Murray is ever going to win this it will be this year.  I think he deserves one but Novak is still an amazing power on the courts.   Murray has the foot speed to match Djokovic but we will see if he can match Novak in weaponry on the court.

I have a personal nickname for Novak after watching him stretch at the U.S. Open. 2 years ago.   He reminded me of Gumby and he stretches like him.  I just ran a search to see if anyone else came up with this and this is not just me thinking this.  I hear he doesn't like it though.  One thing is certain is that his flexibility is one of his biggest assets in play.  It is amazing to see him contort and stretch to retrieve shots and attack from these positions where most would be simply defending.  No one can match him on the men's side for this.  He is like Gumby.

Murray has improved his demeanor on the court and that has made me more respectful of his talents and his acquisition of Lendl as a coach has helped make him a much more dominant player than he ever was.  I still remember Lendl crushing his flat forehands for winners and deep punishing groundstrokes when I went to see him play at the Washington Star Tournament in D.C. back in the 80's.

I tried a demo with the new IG designation and honesty can't tell any difference in the frames other than the color scheme.  So if you are worried that they stopped making them I think you're in good shape as both the old and new are available.  I think the original one is selling for less so I'd opt for that one if you intend to go with this frame.  You can get a Demo for $6.95 from Midwestsports.com

Here is the old model on Amazon.

Nadal Takes 8th French Open Title

Rather than go into it in great detail, let's say that Ferrer knew that his chances of taking this from Nadal were almost zero.  It was foregone barring injury to Nadal.

Ferrer is a great competitor and one of my favorites for the very reason that he is known as a grinder on the tour.  If you run up against him you'll know you were out there.  No one just runs past him without effort.  So when you can see it in his eyes that this is his job, that job being to put on a good show and and do his best but really doesn't expect to beat the guy that has beaten him almost every time they face each other you know that the final would have little of the suspense the match against Novak had going for it.  That was a great match.

Here is a line of up of stories on the French Open final.

Rafa Takes Final Game

Too bad Novak had to go out before the final.  Great win for Rafa.  This should have been a final.

Rafa spoke in 3 languages Spanish, French, and English.  It is fun to watch this guy even after the match.  He does his right handed autographs since he is a natural righty but of course is lethal from the left side.

Read the NYT story about this Timeless Epic

Wimbledon Offers a Huge Payout

Wimbledon Announces New Prize Money Increase

Winning Wimbledon isn't what it used to be.  Back in 1968 which appears to be when they first started actually awarding prize money according to the chart on the Wimbledon website they used to award the men's winner 2,000 British Pounds.  Move the clock forward into 2013 and the winner of men's singles will see 1.600,000 Pounds.

Wimbledon Prize Money and Finance going back to 1968

As you can see, many of the early winners at Wimbledon must feel some envy when these numbers are compared to theirs.

Pro players below the top 10 are quite happy with the new pay scale as well.  Big increases for those that lose early.

The good news about this increase is that many of the pros down toward the number one hundred postion will see a 60% increase in their winnings.  This will help maintain the depth of the tour where making enough money to attend tournaments has always been a difficult concern for those without deep pockets.

Just so it is clear, the prize money is equal for men and women.

Tennis - A Sport for All Ages

Last night at dinner with a fellow pro he told me that a wife wanted to buy her husband some tennis lessons for his birthday.  At first that didn't seem unusual until he told me the potential student was 92 years old.  Amazing huh.  I want to be standing at 92 and here are people training, playing, and competing in a physically demanding sport at that age.

Find me another sport that has a 90+ division for competition.  Some will say golf, but I say golf is a game and if a sport, so are fishing and curling which tell you that not all sports are equal.  Admittedly I am biased towards tennis but I hope you get my point.

I have a student who is 87 years old and he called me up again this Spring for lessons.  And so it goes, since I've had many that keep playing well into their 80's and beyond.

The first rule is playing tennis as you age is to keep playing and don't stop.  If you stop it is definitely tougher but whatever you do keep finding a way out onto the court for your health and happiness.

Here is the USTA Tennis Tournament listings for Seniors and Adults.  Take at look and see the 90 and over division.

Meanwhile there are ten and under competitions and teams for youths through the USTA.

Dream Matches and Best Matches Ever

I have so many best matches ever to watch and remember that it is now hard to say what is the best match of all times.

I still remember Rosewall and Laver in Houston for the WCT finals in 1971 and I suppose there were others but this one stands out to me.  Video.

Here are the dream match-ups that I found listed on Yahoo for 2013.

How about McEnroe vs Wilander in the Davis cup match that lasted 6 hours.

This site isn't bad.  It has a personal choice for the top 20 best matches with a slide show.  I agree with about half of these.  Of course I didn't see all of them, but it is likely the writer didn't see all the matches I've seen either.

I still can't believe it has been 31 years since Mac beat Wilander in that Davis Cup match.  I will have to say Mac is a great commentator for tennis matches but he still has that temper going onto the court.

Wilander is a gentleman and his traveling tennis camps are a great testament to his love of the game and his willingness to share it.

 Check out Wilander on Wheels.

Federer Still Aims for Number One

While playing fewer tournaments Federer claims he can still hit the number one spot if he plays exceptionally well.  More importantly, he believes he can win more Grand Slam tournaments.

I think he can win more as well though the number one position will be tough to get as long as Djokovic stays healthy.

I hope Fed stays in the game for another decade.   We need more records that can't be broken.

Cyber Bullies Move to Tennis - Rebecca Marino To Quit Tennis

This is a sad story about a female tennis player who had enough problems of her own without others adding to them by personally attacking her online.  It also makes you aware the social media is not always a good thing.  It would have been best to limit comments if possible or to just have a fixed page.

Rebecca Marino is going to quit tennis.

I hope she can still find a place on the tennis court either as a teacher or coach since someone so talented would be a great benefit to anyone wanting to learn this game.  You have to think she must have loved this game to become so proficient and hopefully she can find a way to get back to that place.  I always found tennis a great way to escape from those things that can bring you down but the pressure of playing for a living may have been the decisive factor in making it less enjoyable.     I wish her well.

Drug Testing in Tennis

It seems that the time has come for more intensive testing in tennis now that the Armstrong saga has unfolded to prove that he did in fact use banned substances to help him win.

Federer has called for increased testing.  I guess he thinks that there are some guys out there that might resort to such an edge, if indeed it does provide an edge.

Were I playing professionally and playing clean I guess I'd prefer to not lose to somebody that is doping, so I can see his point.

Winning in Tennis

Why does one player always beat another?  Good question, and yet we have no answer beyond he won more points or at least more crucial points.

Here is an excellent analysis of how the game might shape up if the top four players right now were removed from the game.  It would put the level of play back to where it was twenty years ago.

Play Tennis With a War Club

Lendl used one.  Kneissl White Star Masters 30 is a bludgeon weighing in at 12.1 ounces strung before any extra weight is added.  Though Lendl played with a version with his name on it I suspect it was very similar to this model in weight and design.  Mass is the critical element for generating depth on your shots and limiting shock to your arm.  Where you put the mass on the frame will determine the balance and how much racket head speed you can get so many players add weight in the grip.

It is likely the Lendl kept his frames weighing in around 13 ounces much like the rest of the players on the tour during his time and even those currently playing.  Few play with frames that are like the light weight granny sticks that you find on the shelves of sporting goods stores.

I picked this one up years ago to add to my collection representing Lendl during his prime.  I know he played with many others but this is the one I remember as his before the big Sponsors like Adidas.
White Star Masters 30 - Grip Size 4 5/8,  Weight 12.1 ounces.

I still miss watching him play.  The last match I saw him in person was at the Washington Star Tournament in D.C.  The good news is that he's back on the court even if just for some fun.
