Unstoppable - by Maria Sharapova

Book Review and Recommendation: By Brent Herrick

An Honest Memoir

You’ll likely never meet Maria Sharapova and neither will I.  That’s okay, because in this book she talks to you like a confidant, a friend.  She speaks to the reader.   This is one of the more natural memoirs that I’ve read and by the end it is hard not to like her and her father, and even some of the characters she mentions.  Rather than the ice cold fighter on the court that many of us know, we see the other side.  Though I was a Sharapova fan long before this, now I am on her team and you may find yourself  there too.  Before I read this book I was already happy to hear her suspension was lifted so she could begin competing again.  Now, having learned the details and believing them fully I think she was ripped off.  Bureaucrats that maybe never held a racket decided her fate and thankfully some more balanced justice prevailed in the end.  So now let’s talk about her book in detail.

This is a tennis book worth reading if you’re a tennis player and want to learn not only the psychology of a champion but also to get some inside perspective on the effort and lifestyle of a professional tennis player.  Add to this that Sharapova is a distant dream for both men and women.   She’s tall with all the classical features of beauty that are hardened into a princess warrior whose weapon of choice is a tennis racket.  She likes to fight.  As a mortal we can’t even approach an understanding of this but rather just stand back in awe seeing her cold and steel stares during play match confirmed our thoughts that she is a relentless competitor.

Turning Pro and the Life

" A pro athlete really dies twice.(Pg 162)”  Here you learn from the transitional phase of her tennis career  that she finally gains some understandings that challenge her as much as of those on court struggles.  It was her coming of age as a pro.  She helps you understand that much of her life was moving in this direction and now here it is.  She has arrived and a new person emerges.

Sharapova explains that her normal demeanor toward an opponent is revenge.  Someone has done her wrong even if they haven’t simply by being on the other side of the net.  She plays through the match in a battle glazed focus of anger tempered by concentration.  By Sharapova telling us this similar truth about herself I now understand what makes watching her play so compelling.  She isn’t just a tennis player, she is a warrior.  This is single combat and her desire to destroy the opponent comes with the territory.

Add to that something as basic and perfect as her anger about something purely from a woman’s perspective and you have the elements of a bitter struggle for survival out on the tennis court.  Were it not done across a net this would have the same elements of a “girl fight.”  She talked of her match with Hantuchova who happened to wear the same Nike dress the day she played her at Wimbledon.  It’s bad enough this opponent has to stand in her way to the next round, but she is actually wearing the same dress.  She must be sent packing.  I found myself laughing at this part of the book.  I remained smiling for a long time just thinking about this unknown moment to the rest of the world.  I would like to see that match on film just to now enjoy knowing this.

Another big revelation from the book is her relationship with Serena.  They aren’t friends and by most standards are beyond mere opponents.  After Maria beat Serena to win Wimbledon the rivalry was on and Maria  acknowledges that she has only beat Serena twice out of close to twenty matches.  Maria shares a locker room moment between her and Serena that I won’t spoil but is essential in your understanding of their rivalry.

Her Personal Life

Then there is Juan Carlos Ferrero.  Sharapova admits she had a crush on him.  This is the side of her as a reader and fan or spectator you can really enjoy.  She is human after all.  It’s hard to see the person when you are limited by their performance on the court that even there is limited to you by the distance of watching on a TV screen.  This among other secrets she shared has humanized her as much as anything.  Juan Carlos, now just the name will make me smile.   Of course she was much younger than him and she gives him great credit for being a gentleman and very kind to a young girl with a crush.

I read this book in an unusual fashion.  I started right around the place where she began training with Robert Lansdorp.  By doing so, I missed the essential part of Maria Sharapova and her father Yuri.  From that point forward you think of the Maria you have known on TV as a will of steel competitor with a shield of invincibility around her for protection.  Later I came back to reread it from the beginning and it was fascinating to learn that the Ice Princess I so admired on the court had such disadvantages and struggles to overcome to reach the place she did in professional tennis.  Her father is amazing in his dedication to her and it is nice to know she still has a great relationship with him.

Insights

Read the book and you’ll not only learn many things about the life of a tennis champion, but you will learn to like Maria Sharapova in a way you never thought you might.  Also, prepare yourself for some cursing like a sailor in many places in the book but most of us know that such is what often exists out there in the real world.  Maria Sharapova is real and amazingly forthcoming and honest in this book.  It gave me a new perspective on her and professional tennis.

***** Five Stars - Highly Recommend

(I don’t give out five stars very often but the honesty of this book rates it as well as the value it will have in future players that need to know what it takes to get to the top.  It is superb reading and a great information resource.)

Hingis Retires Again

Hingis Retirement

I wish I had seen many more of her doubles matches though I had been able to watch her play live for some team tennis matches.  Were it not for early injuries she might have stayed on the singles tour much longer.  Regardless, she has a lot to be thankful for in that she dominated doubles and probably still could for a number of years.  Doubles is a great game and sadly it just isn't shown as regularly as singles.  Find the time to watch doubles at tournaments and you can learn many great things that will help your singles tennis game.

Nice job Martina.  We'll miss your tennis.

Wear and Tear for Teaching Pros: Arthritis and joint pain

This seems to be a recurring outcome for tennis pros with extended careers. Most of my contemporaries ended up selling real estate, building homes, or just managing a club with assistants handling the teaching load. It hit me almost ten years ago where there were days I dreaded heading to the courts. I love the tennis but my body didn't love the time on hard surfaces.

The only answer I know is to cut back hours on your feet. I know, easily said. and arthritis makes it worse. I use Aspercreme on my hips and knees when sleeping becomes a challenge. Gel shoe inserts help a lot and so do high end shoes like the Brooks Beast. I credit those shoes for keeping me on the court when I thought I was done. New Zealand Green Lipped Mussel extract, Fish oil, and other anti-inflammatory supplements help too.

Health Update: 111 Year Old Smokes 12 Cigars a Day, Pollution Kills

12 Cigars a Day and Whiskey and Coke

Here you go, another outlier that makes the case for doing whatever you enjoy.  Still, if you're a tennis player I'd stay away from the smokes.

Pollution Kills

You can help to reduce your risk by exercise but living in an area where the air and water is bad and even your showers expose you to toxins will put you at risk.

Try to mitigate your risk by living to reduce exposures by choosing food, water, and air intake that will limit your risk.

How:

Stay out of smoky bars and living in places where you can see the air.

Filter your water and I'm not talking just some little sink-top device.  Here is the best way that I know of and yes it takes work but unless you want to put in a very expensive reverse osmosis system with charcoal filtration and chlorine filters you can bypass many dollars spent.

Air filtration is another problem.  If where you live brings you on constant contact with polluted air then it will impact your health.  This is a personal choice.

Exercise helps mitigate many problems associated with the environment so keep with your tennis regimen.

Fasting Benefits

Fasting for health is better than diet

I've tried fasting in the past and I notice it has gotten harder as I get older and life became more complicated.    Still, if you can do it the arguments in favor of some type of fasting in your dietary planning will act to improve your health according to the studies that have come out.

Here is an alternative.  Mini-fasting is something I've resorted to using.  Have your last meal before 6 - 8 pm with no calories after that until the morning.  If you can hold off breakfast until you've made  it 12 -16 hours you've achieved a minimal fast.  Sure many people follow that pattern anyway, but before I purposely followed this approach I used to snack until bedtime often as late at 11pm.

Tennis News: Senior Tennis, 5 Things we learned from Shanghai, Djokovic Encouraged By Fed and Rafa

Senior Tennis

There are few sports that allow for senior participation and tennis is one of them.  I've been working on my senior game since I was a kid.

5 things we learned from Shanghai - Fed the Maestro

Djokovic encouraged

Sure he can get past the injures.  We have no doubts there.  It's the mental part of the game he has to fix by dealing with the distractions of life.   I wish him luck.  It would be great to see Novak back in the mix.

Tennis News: Federer - Nadal Rivalry, Sharapova

Choosing your battles is one of the keys to his current success against Rafa.  Stay away from clay if you want to beat Rafa is the number one rule for Fed.  His transformation also has to do with his racket change and the backhand strategies available to him once he mastered the frame.  In tennis rackets size matters.  You won't see any standard pre-1980's frames winning matches in any profession tournaments or even being used.  The equipment is just that much better.

His style of physical play is clearly taking a toll.  Hang tough Rafa.

Regarding Maria Sharapova.  It is great to see her on the winning side of tennis once again.

Live to 112 - don't drink Coffee

Advice from a 112 year old - don't drink Coffee

So now you see an article that suggests you avoid coffee, yett you read studies that coffee has plenty of benefits for health.  What are you to do?  Lots of centenarians have their own formulas that include eggs and bacon for breakfast every day and some still like their smokes whether it's a cigar, cigarette, or a pipe.

I'd drink coffee if I needed it or liked it and the same for tea.  I prefer both of these iced rather than hot, but the taste and energy boost is hard to ignore as one of life's pleasures.

I'd eat cheesecake if I liked that, and ditto for bacon, eggs, or a beer.   Pizza is probably the one food that almost everyone can enjoy, yet even that has a limit for healthy inclusion in a diet.

Keep in mind that moderation has much in common with investing where you diversify among all investments to limit risk.  Doing the same with your diet while leaning heavily into those healthy dietary habits that are proven to be assets for good health just like an investor has a heavy proportion of their investments in conservative and stable investments while still investing in some less reliable outcomes.  Having a bowl of chocolate ice cream now and then is just like investing in that new tech stock that can give you lots of return but has some serious downsides toward risk.  Limit your exposure to each.

A good strategy for both investing and living includes balance.  This includes eating your green vegetables, low fat meats, beans, and whole grains among many other choices that can either add or diminish your health over time usually depending on how you balance your consumption of each.

Tennis players should think of their diet as a means to health and performance, while now and then eating a ginger snap, frozen yogurt, or some mud pie makes living a disciplined life more tolerable.

Federer on his Winning Strategy

Federer Says Goodbye to Scars and Shanks

He has given an honest assessment of why he has come back.  He changed rackets and that really helped and he also realized that playing Nadal on clay is an almost guaranteed loss for him.

One of the things about Federer that makes him great is his self assessment and improvement based on that honesty.
