Money and Happiness - How it relates to Tennis

New Study from Sweden on Money and Life Satisfaction

I read the story and somehow think it tells me as much about Swedes as it does about lottery winners.  Here is my take on how money can improve life satisfaction.

Were I to win the lottery right now my primary concern would be to find the ideal place to live out my life on the tennis court.  I might take a few trips as I have done recently to scope out some nice tennis locations.  But of course much of what you need to know is out there on the web.

Rather, I'd look at likely places after reading about them and visit and maybe even stay a while or even a long while.  It's amazing what you can do when you have the time to do it and aren't fettered by work.

Find a place that supports your values and preferred lifestyle and for me that wouldn't be the fanciest or richest place to live but rather a place where I can do what I've always done and that is to enjoy tennis year round when possible with moderate competition and more importantly a place not barren of tennis courts and players.

I've lived in places, not long usually, where there were either none or poorly maintained courts say for instance  the West Virginia Mountains.  It's just not generally part of the culture for a variety of reasons.  I'm sure there are a few resorts where you can enjoy it but not in general and there are many more places across the USA like that just like there are in the rest of the world.  Sure you can try to create it but it isn't easy and it has to become an obsession to actually get things started in  a place where none exists.

So look for  a place where life is easy and for me that includes courts.  But courts alone won't do it unless maybe you have a backboard too since if there are no or few players then you will be resigned to wall hitting or just self feeding drills and hitting serves unless you want to buy a battery powered ball machine.

So back to the original idea, I'd search around and find a place where I could get up in the morning knowing that a few hours of each day on the tennis court are on my schedule.  Later, maybe some golf or fishing might be nice, but the tennis is what I would want.

Since you're reading this on a tennis blog then of course you can understand why this is my focus.  If you have something else more important to you then focus on that and where to live to enjoy that life.  It seems to me it's as simple as that.

Best luck on your journey, rich or not.

Depression: Who finds a way to stay depressed?

Who

They did mention staying in the house or shutting yourself in.  If you want a twofer for working against depression get some sun and exercise at the same time on the tennis court.  If you can find a friendly partner this adds in a social outlet.

Health Risks of Outdoor Sports: Lyme Disease and Tennis, Glyphosate

Lyme Risk

If you think of tennis you imagine how can there be risk of Lyme out there on the court.  Truthfully, probably very little but surrounding those courts you often have grassy areas or woods that can hide the menace of ticks.  Go out there to retrieve a ball and you might have just picked up the vector parasite that can infect you with a list of bacterial infections that can become severe health problems if not treated.

Advice:  When retrieving balls in the grass or woods always do an immediate tick check on your legs and clothes.  There are times and places where I won't even retrieve a ball knowing that the risk of picking up either a tick or a poison ivy rash outweigh the cost of a lost practice ball.  I suggest the same.

If you do find a tick and it is moving then you should be fine in just removing it.  If it has attached then move stringent measures are needed and rather than go into these here I suggest that you look online for further information.

It is quite serious so I suggest you consider the risk when retrieving balls and also if you find a tick attached and remove it.

Glyphosate exposure from treated areas near courts.

Whatever you do try to make sure you aren't around when they are spraying it so that you don't inhale the fumes or that you near it while it dries and evaporates.  Even tennis balls that end up in treated areas can be a source of exposure.  It's hard to say how dangerous the risk is but if you have a choice avoid exposure for your long term health.

There are definite advantages to kids of rich parents if they desire to become a pro in any sport.  Tennis especially offer that since coaching and traveling is a big expense.  Having a tennis court in the backyard can't hurt.

Vitas Gerulaitis

I'm putting my Vitas Gerulaitis Autograph Wood Racket up for sale for those who are collectors.  This is a standard wood frame with a printed autograph.  It's not actually signed by him.

Below is a little background on Vitas.

If you want to learn more about Vitas here is the wiki link.

ATP

For those who never saw him play I can tell you that he had a classic game that was smooth, graceful, and aggressive.  He happened to be a top player when some of the best players that ever lived were dominating tennis so his record isn't as exceptional as it might appear, but he faced Jimmy Conners, Bjorn Borg, John McEnroe, and Nastase to name a few.  It was as tough a time to try to stay in the top tier as it is now.

Movie Review: Borg VS McEnroe

I finally got around to watching this movie.  It is a well done and the effort to find actors that look like the players is amazing especially in the case of Borg.  Assuming that the storyline is based on truthful events I did learn some things that I didn't know.  First, I didn't know Borg had a temper on the court that he eventually brought under control to the extent he was known as the iceman.  I didn't know that Borg ran into Mac at the airport shortly after Wimbledon and they spoke.  If true, this also explains how they became friends over time.

If you are a tennis enthusiast then it is mandatory to eventually see this movie.  It helps fill in some gaps in what may have happened behind the scenes.  Even those of us that followed things closely and read about events as well will find something new.   On top of all of this I find it a very entertaining movie.

Health: Idodine Benefits, Vitamin D for Cancer Prevention, Tennis Elbow

Iodine

Vitamin D

It has mood improving benefits as well, but knowing how much it can help the immune system is a big reason to manage your time outside.  I still think it pays to use sun screen on your face and wear a hat and shirt but a moderate amount of sun exposure daily helps with your moods and immune system if the vitamin D studies are correct.
