The Federer Saga: When?

When will he retire?
I suggest he keep things even and just say go for 2020 and if he's still going well then he should add another two years.

Keeping his expectations in check.
We all hope he stays smart and well enough to keep the run going for another decade or so.   Expectations or not, can we as Federer fans not be blamed for our selfish desire for the Maestro to continue as long as possible.

Tennis Career Changed Forever: Roger Federer

Career Changing Moment for Federer

This is a reality check for any athlete is the moment an injury occurs that you know is either career ending or will limit your performance in the future.  It happens to many before they are ever known and the ones you see in the upper levels of any sport are just the ones that avoided injuries.

There are a lot of reasons to eat salads such as increased fiber for good digestion, fresh food that has many more nutrients, and of course reduced inflammation.  This can be seen as another reason to include at least one fresh salad in your diet daily.

Kyrgious update

Kyrgious goes coachless

We'll see how this works out for him.  I wonder if it's because he doesn't like the discipline that comes with dealing with a coach or coaches don't want to deal with bad behavior.  He can be a great player, but his mind is the only thing holding him back.

Retirement Risk: Die Early, Loneliness

Dying Early Comes With Early Retirement Says Study

Two things here.  One is that many who retire early do so because of health issues rather than desire to stop working.  But for those who choose to stop working the other risk may be lack of activity.  This is where regular exercise, social engagement, and something that gives you purpose can keep you healthy both physically and mentally.  Here again is my argument for taking up tennis if you aren't a player or to get back into it if you can play and have stopped.  Those who stay with the game are the best candidates for long term health and overall happiness.

Loneliness Can Make You Sick

Stay social.  Go out and participate in something and of course my preference is tennis and I hope it might be yours.

Is Being Left Handed in Tennis an Advantage

Advantage or Not

The article says not really, but I suggest that especially in the lower ranks having a left handed slice serve is a great advantage.

The other big advantage a lefty has is that right handers don't see them as often on the court and many times don't figure out they're playing a lefty until the first set is over and soon the match.  Playing against a left handed player that has the strong ad court slice serve and a very strong forehand puts many right handers off their game because they tend to attack the backhand side for a right hander, the ad court, as a strategy.  Doing so feeds right into the strength of a lefty forehand while this allows for a strong crosscourt play to the right hander's backhand.  Add in a very strong two handed backhand like Rafa and you have a hard game play against.

If I were given a choice knowing I would be a tennis player I'd choose being born a lefty.  Consider yourself lucky if you love tennis and are a southpaw.

Tennis News: Muguruza on Nadal, Formula One or Tennis, Nadal and Muguruza ITF Winners

Muguruza

He chose Formula One but it seems his heart is still in tennis.  It doesn't hurt to be able to watch it from a box in Wimbledon.

ITF Winners

This is  a great milestone for Muguruza as it is proof that she has arrived along with her Championship wins, and for Nadal it is a testament to his indomitable will when it comes to winning on the court.   Both of them deserve this.

Retirement is one Third of Your Life - Think Tennis

Retirement is one third of your life

I don't agree with this time assessment since many will not be able to retire at sixty and live to ninety.  But keeping in mind that it might cover one fourth of your life then you might consider what pastimes you can participate in while you hit those so called golden years.  Think Tennis

Tennis Coaching: An Example of What It Can Be

Kendall Bolock excels

I'll let the article speak for itself.  Just read to see all the things this young lady has gained from tennis so far and credit has to start with a beginning on the tennis court by a coach.  Time, effort, and motivation supply the rest.

History of the Tennis Racket

The History of the Tennis Racket is something few tennis players know or consider.  Those of us old enough have been able to play with frames of every recent innovation.  The following links and comments should give you some understanding of what changes have come along in the past fifty to sixty years in tennis rackets.

Evolution
One thing left out of this article was that the inventor of the metal tennis racket was Renee Lacoste and this came out in the form of the T-2000 by Wilson and popularized by Jimmy Connors.  I never liked the racket myself but it did start a move toward metal frames that dominated the sport for over a decade until composite frames came along.

Then came the oversized rackets with the big heads.  First came the Weed.  It was huge and I think the reason it never took off was the balance and control issues that came with a racket that resembled a butterfly net that was tightly weaved.  It gave you power but control was something else.  Then along came Howard Head.  Howard Head Wiki

Obituary - Howard Head - 1991

This article strays from invention to make clear the title of the story really is about social causes which is not what I want to show you but the article does have some good information on Howard Head.   It's funny to see engineers go on about social issues.  Think of the real and actual benefit of the oversized rackets.  It did make life easier for many players.  But the tennis boom had occurred before the big rackets came along and it was dying because the sport was difficult among other things and disorganized.  The mistakes made were with governments who thought that if you built lots of courts everywhere that people would play and they did for a while.  What was really needed was the Junior programs, tournaments, and coaching to get people involved in the sport and get past the hard beginning.  The big rackets helped as well since they made up to some extent for technique and mobility but in the end those two things still carry the day once the big size rackets are factored in.   As a correction:  The Weed Racket was the first oversized frame and the details of it's invention aren't known to me, but it's possible that more than one person came up with the idea at the same time.

Racket-ball is an easy sport by comparison and you see how that has all but gone by the wayside as a means of recreation.  So making a sport easy is only part of it.  It also has to have enough complexity and benefit of continued effort to prove that someone is not just a jock but a disciplined athlete or at least a focused competitor.    We'll see how Pickleball fares over the long term but for now it seems that it is designed for Seniors who either have trouble moving as much or never really learned to play tennis.
Now with USTA leagues the sport at least has a strong following among adults but other sports such as soccer still have the greater support of county programs.

This is where the ITF gets some credit.  You have to strike a balance between making the sport easy and just taking away the essential elements that make watching good tennis so wonderful.   Thus the ITF defines the rules on how a racket must be designed to be allowed in amateur and professional play.

Big Bubba and other Outlaws - The 29 inch racket rule

I always got a laugh looking at some of these frames.  The problem is that you have to change your game to accommodate them as even Roger Federer found out during his transition to a larger racket head but the positive outcome is hard to dispute.

10 Rackets that changed the Game

I've played with many of these and am quite happy to enjoy the Head Radical OS Series now.  In their day each of these frame contributed to some great tennis performances.

Something Wrong with Tennis says Safin

Safin says there with Fed and Rafa at top again

We know they won't likely be there much longer so what is wrong with some of the best players that ever held a racket running up the score a bit longer.  The men that can't yet beat them just don't have the requisite skills and experience yet to take them down in the big matches.  It is great for tennis to have these remarkable players stay around longer.  Safin apparently doesn't remember Rosewall and Laver player late into their thirties and Rosewall winning the big ones at age 37.

Rosewall Does and thinks Fed can keep it going a bit longer.

The likelihood is that the alcohol in mouthwash is the culprit.  That might also mean drinking is no longer a good idea.  Oh wait, that hasn't been a good idea for a while unless you drink wine according to some studies but new studies will probably change that.

Nadal - Federer - extraterrestrial and tennis manic - both appear bionic

Nadal - extraterrestrial
I could agree with Magnus Norman on this and would add that a DNA check might prove he is an off planet arrival with superhuman abilities.

Federer - Tennis Manic
He's my kind of maniac then.  It's hard not to like a guy that keeps going, and going, and going.

My take on this combined feat of both of these incredible tennis players is that they do whatever it takes to keep winning and that includes having the mindset needed to adapt and overcome all obstacles.

We are lucky to have these two gentlemen at the top of our sport again.  They both set the standard for behavior and excellence unmatched in any other sport.  The two of them have remade tennis for the better.

Pancho Segura Dies at 96 - Washington Post
Another tennis great from the past has passed away.   He was the world Co-number-one in  1950 and 1951.

Segura Knows the Score
He was a master of tennis in knowledge, strategy, skill.  Self Taught.

Coached Jimmy Connors - Star Tribune
Segura was instrumental in the Connors success in 1974 at Wimbledon and the US Open where he crushed Ken Rosewall in both matches.  At Wimbledon in 1974 when Connors crushed Ken Rosewall in the final it was Segura who cheered and again at the US Open.  He predicted that Connors would become the King of Wimbledon and though not accurate completely he was an early cheerleader for Jimmy Connors as a force in tennis.   Connors later writes that he regrets pushing Segura out of his entourage.

It's a filthy racket

Tennis racket used to mash potatoes in London Bakery

I don't see a problem here if you remember how Jack Lemmon used a tennis racket to strain spaghetti in a movie titled The Apartment." 1960.

In the kitchen with Jack Lemmon tennis racket scene.

Of course that was a movie, and this sadly is a place where people bought food.

My recommendation is to use a real strainer and save your racket for tennis for something not involving food unless maybe you desire to use one as a serving tray with a liner to actually keep the food clean.

This article was supposedly a slam against Rafa by Fed but I didn't read it that way.  They are both putting forth their opinions and it seems that Fed was careful not to make it personal and neither did Rafa.  Let's not see a feud but rather a rivalry among gentlemen which is ideally what tennis represents.

Unstoppable - by Maria Sharapova

Book Review and Recommendation: By Brent Herrick

An Honest Memoir

You’ll likely never meet Maria Sharapova and neither will I.  That’s okay, because in this book she talks to you like a confidant, a friend.  She speaks to the reader.   This is one of the more natural memoirs that I’ve read and by the end it is hard not to like her and her father, and even some of the characters she mentions.  Rather than the ice cold fighter on the court that many of us know, we see the other side.  Though I was a Sharapova fan long before this, now I am on her team and you may find yourself  there too.  Before I read this book I was already happy to hear her suspension was lifted so she could begin competing again.  Now, having learned the details and believing them fully I think she was ripped off.  Bureaucrats that maybe never held a racket decided her fate and thankfully some more balanced justice prevailed in the end.  So now let’s talk about her book in detail.

This is a tennis book worth reading if you’re a tennis player and want to learn not only the psychology of a champion but also to get some inside perspective on the effort and lifestyle of a professional tennis player.  Add to this that Sharapova is a distant dream for both men and women.   She’s tall with all the classical features of beauty that are hardened into a princess warrior whose weapon of choice is a tennis racket.  She likes to fight.  As a mortal we can’t even approach an understanding of this but rather just stand back in awe seeing her cold and steel stares during play match confirmed our thoughts that she is a relentless competitor.

Turning Pro and the Life

" A pro athlete really dies twice.(Pg 162)”  Here you learn from the transitional phase of her tennis career  that she finally gains some understandings that challenge her as much as of those on court struggles.  It was her coming of age as a pro.  She helps you understand that much of her life was moving in this direction and now here it is.  She has arrived and a new person emerges.

Sharapova explains that her normal demeanor toward an opponent is revenge.  Someone has done her wrong even if they haven’t simply by being on the other side of the net.  She plays through the match in a battle glazed focus of anger tempered by concentration.  By Sharapova telling us this similar truth about herself I now understand what makes watching her play so compelling.  She isn’t just a tennis player, she is a warrior.  This is single combat and her desire to destroy the opponent comes with the territory.

Add to that something as basic and perfect as her anger about something purely from a woman’s perspective and you have the elements of a bitter struggle for survival out on the tennis court.  Were it not done across a net this would have the same elements of a “girl fight.”  She talked of her match with Hantuchova who happened to wear the same Nike dress the day she played her at Wimbledon.  It’s bad enough this opponent has to stand in her way to the next round, but she is actually wearing the same dress.  She must be sent packing.  I found myself laughing at this part of the book.  I remained smiling for a long time just thinking about this unknown moment to the rest of the world.  I would like to see that match on film just to now enjoy knowing this.

Another big revelation from the book is her relationship with Serena.  They aren’t friends and by most standards are beyond mere opponents.  After Maria beat Serena to win Wimbledon the rivalry was on and Maria  acknowledges that she has only beat Serena twice out of close to twenty matches.  Maria shares a locker room moment between her and Serena that I won’t spoil but is essential in your understanding of their rivalry.

Her Personal Life

Then there is Juan Carlos Ferrero.  Sharapova admits she had a crush on him.  This is the side of her as a reader and fan or spectator you can really enjoy.  She is human after all.  It’s hard to see the person when you are limited by their performance on the court that even there is limited to you by the distance of watching on a TV screen.  This among other secrets she shared has humanized her as much as anything.  Juan Carlos, now just the name will make me smile.   Of course she was much younger than him and she gives him great credit for being a gentleman and very kind to a young girl with a crush.

I read this book in an unusual fashion.  I started right around the place where she began training with Robert Lansdorp.  By doing so, I missed the essential part of Maria Sharapova and her father Yuri.  From that point forward you think of the Maria you have known on TV as a will of steel competitor with a shield of invincibility around her for protection.  Later I came back to reread it from the beginning and it was fascinating to learn that the Ice Princess I so admired on the court had such disadvantages and struggles to overcome to reach the place she did in professional tennis.  Her father is amazing in his dedication to her and it is nice to know she still has a great relationship with him.

Insights

Read the book and you’ll not only learn many things about the life of a tennis champion, but you will learn to like Maria Sharapova in a way you never thought you might.  Also, prepare yourself for some cursing like a sailor in many places in the book but most of us know that such is what often exists out there in the real world.  Maria Sharapova is real and amazingly forthcoming and honest in this book.  It gave me a new perspective on her and professional tennis.

***** Five Stars - Highly Recommend

(I don’t give out five stars very often but the honesty of this book rates it as well as the value it will have in future players that need to know what it takes to get to the top.  It is superb reading and a great information resource.)

Hingis Retires Again

Hingis Retirement

I wish I had seen many more of her doubles matches though I had been able to watch her play live for some team tennis matches.  Were it not for early injuries she might have stayed on the singles tour much longer.  Regardless, she has a lot to be thankful for in that she dominated doubles and probably still could for a number of years.  Doubles is a great game and sadly it just isn't shown as regularly as singles.  Find the time to watch doubles at tournaments and you can learn many great things that will help your singles tennis game.

Nice job Martina.  We'll miss your tennis.

Wear and Tear for Teaching Pros: Arthritis and joint pain

This seems to be a recurring outcome for tennis pros with extended careers. Most of my contemporaries ended up selling real estate, building homes, or just managing a club with assistants handling the teaching load. It hit me almost ten years ago where there were days I dreaded heading to the courts. I love the tennis but my body didn't love the time on hard surfaces.

The only answer I know is to cut back hours on your feet. I know, easily said. and arthritis makes it worse. I use Aspercreme on my hips and knees when sleeping becomes a challenge. Gel shoe inserts help a lot and so do high end shoes like the Brooks Beast. I credit those shoes for keeping me on the court when I thought I was done. New Zealand Green Lipped Mussel extract, Fish oil, and other anti-inflammatory supplements help too.

Health Update: 111 Year Old Smokes 12 Cigars a Day, Pollution Kills

12 Cigars a Day and Whiskey and Coke

Here you go, another outlier that makes the case for doing whatever you enjoy.  Still, if you're a tennis player I'd stay away from the smokes.

Pollution Kills

You can help to reduce your risk by exercise but living in an area where the air and water is bad and even your showers expose you to toxins will put you at risk.

Try to mitigate your risk by living to reduce exposures by choosing food, water, and air intake that will limit your risk.

How:

Stay out of smoky bars and living in places where you can see the air.

Filter your water and I'm not talking just some little sink-top device.  Here is the best way that I know of and yes it takes work but unless you want to put in a very expensive reverse osmosis system with charcoal filtration and chlorine filters you can bypass many dollars spent.

Air filtration is another problem.  If where you live brings you on constant contact with polluted air then it will impact your health.  This is a personal choice.

Exercise helps mitigate many problems associated with the environment so keep with your tennis regimen.

Fasting Benefits

Fasting for health is better than diet

I've tried fasting in the past and I notice it has gotten harder as I get older and life became more complicated.    Still, if you can do it the arguments in favor of some type of fasting in your dietary planning will act to improve your health according to the studies that have come out.

Here is an alternative.  Mini-fasting is something I've resorted to using.  Have your last meal before 6 - 8 pm with no calories after that until the morning.  If you can hold off breakfast until you've made  it 12 -16 hours you've achieved a minimal fast.  Sure many people follow that pattern anyway, but before I purposely followed this approach I used to snack until bedtime often as late at 11pm.

Tennis News: Federer - Nadal Rivalry, Sharapova

Choosing your battles is one of the keys to his current success against Rafa.  Stay away from clay if you want to beat Rafa is the number one rule for Fed.  His transformation also has to do with his racket change and the backhand strategies available to him once he mastered the frame.  In tennis rackets size matters.  You won't see any standard pre-1980's frames winning matches in any profession tournaments or even being used.  The equipment is just that much better.

His style of physical play is clearly taking a toll.  Hang tough Rafa.

Live to 112 - don't drink Coffee

Advice from a 112 year old - don't drink Coffee

So now you see an article that suggests you avoid coffee, yett you read studies that coffee has plenty of benefits for health.  What are you to do?  Lots of centenarians have their own formulas that include eggs and bacon for breakfast every day and some still like their smokes whether it's a cigar, cigarette, or a pipe.

I'd drink coffee if I needed it or liked it and the same for tea.  I prefer both of these iced rather than hot, but the taste and energy boost is hard to ignore as one of life's pleasures.

I'd eat cheesecake if I liked that, and ditto for bacon, eggs, or a beer.   Pizza is probably the one food that almost everyone can enjoy, yet even that has a limit for healthy inclusion in a diet.

Keep in mind that moderation has much in common with investing where you diversify among all investments to limit risk.  Doing the same with your diet while leaning heavily into those healthy dietary habits that are proven to be assets for good health just like an investor has a heavy proportion of their investments in conservative and stable investments while still investing in some less reliable outcomes.  Having a bowl of chocolate ice cream now and then is just like investing in that new tech stock that can give you lots of return but has some serious downsides toward risk.  Limit your exposure to each.

A good strategy for both investing and living includes balance.  This includes eating your green vegetables, low fat meats, beans, and whole grains among many other choices that can either add or diminish your health over time usually depending on how you balance your consumption of each.

Tennis players should think of their diet as a means to health and performance, while now and then eating a ginger snap, frozen yogurt, or some mud pie makes living a disciplined life more tolerable.

Balance and Moderation  - Suggestions for the day.

Nutrition: Maintaining Weight Loss, Hydration, Bottled Water - the source, Water Filtration

Drop the diet for two weeks
This information does comport with the information showing that the human body adapts to dietary changes by adjusting metabolism so if you cut calories down and stay there your weight loss will level off.  It works better to vary your intake overall and changing patterns.

Be careful of the Tom Brady hydration method
As an athlete you should stay hydrated and whatever recommendations are given for office workers that don't sweat you should take into account that you do.  Drink water often and especially if you are perspiring and staying active.  Heat exhaustion is no fun and can risk heat stroke by losing too many liquids and not replacing them.

Sleep Deprivation Reduces Depression
When I grew up they called this work.  You have a job that requires you to get up early or in some cases work through the night and lo and behold you have no energy to be depressed.  Plus your body tends to focus on objectives and the goal of getting through the day and getting the job done is enough to change your focus.  I'm sure there is a biochemical benefit as well, but your need to focus has to be a big component.  Add in some coffee and there you are, viola, less depression until you get your paycheck and notice all the taxes, fees, and healthcare expenses taken out.

Bottled Water
The source matters and of course the resources directed toward it raise the cost.

Water Filtration - Here is another option.

My favorite it the Berkey system.  I've used this countertop system for the past three years and have found it an excellent alternative to bottled water.  Take the water you have and make it good tasting and safe.

Wealth: Time for Your Life's Work

Money=Agency=Freedom

If you want to be a tennis coach, instructor, or simply have the time to play  in your adult years then wealth is a great source of power to follow your desires.

So, looking at wealth in a certain way that gives you freedom to live life as you want means spending less time on accumulating things on more time on putting together a means of income that will offer you the time and freedom to do what you want.

One way to understand what this means is to imagine what you would do if you won the lottery with enough money to quit work and do whatever you wanted to do.

Tom Brady Diet: Tennis Players Should Take Note

Tom Brady Diet

This diet comports with the current recommendations to limit carbs that cause inflammation. The type of food you eat determines benefits and problem.  He also focuses on food combinations.  This is a long known approach to good digestion and excellent use of nutrients used by certain natural food adherents.  The concept is that when you combine fruits with proteins, or vegetables the body is challenged to effectively digest each of these nutrients since each requires a different balance of digestive acids to make use of them.

Here is one early proponent of good digestive food combinations called the hygienic system by Dr. Herbert Shelton.

Here is a critical analysis of such an approach to food combinations that essentially says it is not correct.

It's hard disagree with Brady when it comes to maintaining longevity and performance so take aways some ideas from him and use what you can.  I like the shakes.

US Open Update: Tennis Injuries reduce men's Lineup

US Open Injuries Reduce Lineup in Men's Draw

The old style of play had a lot of things going for it including fewer injuries.  For club and league players the style of the past is still quite useful in that in works well with aging bodies.  The equipment out there can still be used to hit the flat and backspin shots needed to learn that style but you need to look toward 11-12 ounce frames and there aren't many of these.  The Head Radical series has a few of them along with Kennex, and possibly Yonex.  Look around and find an answer to your aching wrist, elbow, and shoulder with a change in equipment and style of play.  If you're not a pro why live with the increased injury risk that comes with the heavy spin fast hitting style now seen in the professional game.

Diet and Health: 4 Cups of Coffee Reduces Early Death Risk 64%, Too Much Salt Deadly

4 Cups of Coffee

It's always good to hear that something as enjoyable as coffee has health benefits.  If you're an athlete and think avoiding all things like caffeine and alcohol will make you stronger and more resilient this may be one case where abstaining is a disadvantage.  Notice that de-caffeinated coffee seems to have similar benefits if the caffeine bothers you.

Too Much Salt Doubles Heart Failure Risk

It does pay to limit salt intake somewhat and exercise in the heat is one way to help excrete it.

Avoiding Sports Head Injuries: Play Tennis

There is risk in almost all sports.  Each sports has a list of them.

One playing golf may have to worry about overexposure to the sun, or too much drinking at the same time becoming dehydrated from lack of water.

Boxing risks head injuries as does football, soccer, and even basketball and baseball but the risk is not as high in these.

Tennis carries repetitive use injury risk such as tennis elbow, wrist injuries, and even back and knee problems but most of these come from heavy use.  If you don''t drink water you can become dehydrated and lack of a hat or sunscreen is a choice rather than a risk to overexposure to the sun.

Your risk of head injuries in tennis may come from a fall if you lose your balance, or maybe if you hit yourself with a racket.  In doubles there is risk that a partner could run into you or hit you with a racket.  But each of these is rare and improbable to cause an extreme injury beyond a bump on the head.

The risk is minimal on a tennis court for the type of head injuries that come with contact sports.  I you want your kids to play a sport that limits head injury risk while at the same time giving them a sport for life this is the one.

Exercise: A helpful Cure to Constipation

Study Shows increased problems in USA

So they blame it on a modern life.  If you eat right with a fair amount of fiber and just get out and move you'll be much less likely to have problems.

Where does Tennis come into the picture?  How many regular tennis players do you know with digestive issues and in particular constipation.  I submit that just the level of activity required to participate in the game at almost any level is easily the physical activity component needed to keep things moving.  Add in high fiber food and if necessary some of the fiber powder used by older people and you should be without issue.

Food for Health and Pleasure: How to Reheat Pizza, When to Drink Coffee

How to reheat Pizza
This is some great information.  I'll have to try it.  Pizza is a mainstay of diets for many people, even health addicts, but especially tennis players that need the carbs, fat , and protein in a fast and simple food.

When to Drink Coffee
This is a great idea.  Drink a little later than first thing in the morning and stop by mid afternoon to avoid keeping yourself awake at night.

What Happened to Fed Against Hass

Fed Comeback cut Short by Hass

I watched the match.  Fed was flat and Hass was hot.  That combination has cost many great players a win against a player not considered their equal.  Hass is on the long side of his tennis career and for him to come up with play as he did is commendable and was nice to see.  Fed on the other hand is going to have some of these days where his timing seems gone and his movement is of course less and less anyway.  He may have thought that he could coast through this match and maybe didn't take it serious until it became serious.  Whatever the case, I still expect to see Fed back in prime form soon.  This should remind him to get in some serious competition before Wimbledon.  He should rent a grass court somewhere and line up one top player after another for some tennis.  Just my thought on the subject.  Congratulations to Tommy Hass and I hope his retirement becomes the best part of his tennis career.

Health Update: Pets offer health benefits, Boredom health problems

Pets are the new probiotic

This isn't new information.  Past studies indicate pets in the home while children grow up adds to their resistance to allergies and other conditions.

Boredom  linked to health problems

No surprise here.  It is probably a mild form of depression.

Owning a dog means you have to walk it and get mandator exercise.  It looks like the solution is to own a dog if you're bored and you can take it for walks.

Tennis Pro Retirement: The three legged chair is fading

Three legged retirement

If you aren't near retirement now then you can question how much social security you may receive.  If you have a 401K or IRA your investments may not work out as planned.  Almost no one gets a pension unless you work for the government in some way.  For the rest of us, and especially tennis teachers who are self employed your only way to prepare for retirement is to save well, invest, and consider some form of private pension by allocating some of your retirement funding in an annuity.

Not saving enough is biggest financial regret

Creating your own three legged retirement means considering each as a part of the whole, but adding a fourth leg by working in retirement can become the way to safely navigate your reclining years.  As a tennis teacher your ability to just slow down and take less work while still working and generating income is a sound approach to making it through.

In addition, just having something to do that keeps you involved is a great justification for teaching long after many others might have quit their 9-5 jobs.

This is how I approach retirement.  I just shared my ideas of how I have worked to navigate the sometimes difficult idea of having a comfortable and successful and winning fifth set in the grand slam event of life.   Winning in this case means you live life as you choose.

Disclaimer: I am not an investment or retirement professional so please do not consider this investment advice but rather ideas for discussion.   Seek professional assistance for your retirement planning.

Enough of Sharapova Talk

http://www.tennis.com/pro-game/2017/05/kuznetsova-other-wta-players-are-tired-talking-about-sharapova/65984/

It is nothing but a distraction.  Let Sharapova prove herself again on the court and at the same time prove that she isn't using banned substances by playing and submitting to testing like other pros.  Beyond that the chatter should end.

One question I have about all of the testing is that it appears easy to mistakenly take supplements that might cause you to fail a drug test.  It seems that there should be a way to confirm that some type of supplement is approved or not beforehand rather than face the risk of a ban.

Tennis Teachers in Retirement: Keep Working

Why Delaying Retirement is Good for You

Even if you weren't a tennis instructor for your primary working lifetime you can make it a post retirement paying avocation.  I have known many that have done just this.

Your post retirement approach to work

I knew a schoolteacher who retired from teaching but he had also volunteered to coach tennis at his school so he already had some experience.  It turned out to be a good thing for him and the community as he taught until he passed away in his early 90's.

In another case I had a friend that liked tennis and became a strong player but made his living in the corporate world.   After his retirement he went looking for something to do that didn't involve the stress he had lived most of his working life.   He found tennis teaching and community tennis programs were the ideal thing for him to do and also made a fair amount of income as well.  He finally took a full retirement when health problems caused him to move into an independent and then later an assisted living facility,  but until that time he had a very active life.

Anyone that loves tennis can find some way to get involved

In addition to these two examples I know many people in various walks of life from physical therapists, military retirees, teachers, and former coaches in other sports who are tennis enthusiasts plan to take up teaching as a part time solution to retirement activity and income.  If you are contemplating such an approach my main suggestion is to get started with teaching skills by taking training and to get involved on a volunteer basis for county programs or local tennis associations.  You could even set up something in your local community but keep in mind that insurance is always the issue so getting some sort of certification with insurance that is offered makes good sense.  It will also help you decide if this lifestyle is for you.

Keep Teaching

Finally, if you are already a tennis teacher the best way to stay active is to keep teaching.  Sure, you don't want to put in fifty hour weeks on the court, but how about scaling down and teaching twenty hours.  When I say twenty hours I mean combined group and private lessons because if you're doing twenty hours a week of private lessons you're still putting a serious effort into your job.

I have a couple of tennis pro friends that share with me the challenges of reaching the age of sixty and thinking they can still maintain the teaching schedule they may have had for the past thirty years.  It simply isn't possible without wearing yourself down and eventually out.  I ran into this myself as injuries and repetitive use problems seemed to show up much more often as I headed toward my sixties.

A modest approach

Do a slow fade.  Just allow your schedule to slow down to match your financial and health needs.  If you can get by with only fifteen or twenty hours a week on the court then do it.  The nice thing is that you'll still get the benefits of social engagement if you spend time in the community teaching tennis and sharing what you've learned.    If you still have management responsibilities at a club then you can focus more on those and less on teaching.

Share the Game

You can also use the opportunity to mentor others that want to get into teaching and since you're no longer in competition for business it might be one of the best things you can do to help keep tennis growing in your community.  I have taken the opportunity many times to bring others into teaching, coaching, and just volunteering in tennis.  It's a good thing for everyone involved.

It is a perfect retirement atmosphere

The environment for tennis is conducive to fun and interaction which are essential parts of staying happy and healthy.  If you can make some money at the same time to help support your retirement needs then you've accomplished the ideal which is to find something that keeps you involved and yet allows you to live a comfortable life.
