Tennis News: Rafa Engaged, Lisicki Bugged, Sharapova Shoulder Out

Rafa Engaged

And now we have another reason for his less than stellar final at the AO.  I've never seen a player at their best when getting married, working up to it, or falling in love.  Give it some time and hopefully marriage won't distract him.

Lisicki bugged by Ball Kid

She'd better toughen up.  The girl that smashed that bug probably has done it many times before as you learn to do when living in the tropics.  What was she supposed to do?  Pick it up and walk it outside.

Sharapova out due to shoulder pain

She's been through this before and should be careful.

How to Avoid Over Analyzing While Playing

In response to a situation that comes up often among players still developing their technique they often keep analyzing their strokes while playing. I saw a question online today about this. Here is my suggestion for getting past this.

A reliable Fix:

I've seen many beginners successfully ignore overthinking by naturally being competitively intense. To have your mind occupied with technique while playing a match it means to me that a player needs to learn to focus. Heightened intensity is where your mind has no room for technical concerns.

At an intermediate playing level you need a weapon that won't break down. I'd pick one and work on it until it becomes highly capable of direction, depth, spin, and then speed. The forehand is usually the best stroke for this project. At that point you can implement strategy and forget worrying about form while playing. The other strokes will follow.

Do you need an example of intensity to emulate. Think Rafa Nadal

New Dawn in Women's Tennis

Women's Tennis needed a new smiling face and more competition among the top players where it was once dominated by Serena.  Ideally, it will be a struggle among the top ten for dominance with the top four or five exchanging wins.  It never seems to bode well for epic matches when one player is so strong that the others never take the crowns.

Hopefully Naomi will stay at the very top and continue to win with her wonderful style and also post match grace.

Of course the ball speed mattered to Fed.  His game now depends on it more than ever.  Someone changed the formula at the AO and it favored the ground game guys.

Of course it is within the realm of reality.  They stated the options and new challengers are what may put this to rest.

Tennis Coaching: Is it a Flaw or Just a Mistake - Jacques Tennis Seminars

Is it a flaw or just a mistake?”
By Nick Jacques and Mark Tennant

(Reprinted with Permission)

I was a national champion swimmer as a junior and technique was very important as in swimming which is closed skill sport, your success as an athlete hinges on how efficiently you can move through the water. Air is 784 times less dense than water and requires an entirely different set of technical skills than any other land-based sport. For this reason, any flaw in form is magnified exponentially in the water.
Tennis being an open skilled sport requires many skills and techniques. There are the fundamental tennis technical skills that every beginner player should acquire but these skills needs to be adaptable and relevant to the game of tennis so as the player matures they can learn more advanced skills. Honing in on your technique is a great way to reach your potential in tennis as it can drastically improve your efficiency, speed, consistency and confidence on the court.
However during a coaching session it’s important to identify if what we see is a flaw or a mistake. Are we jumping in too soon and preventing the child from correcting their own mistakes and assuming there is a lack of skill, when actually it could just be a matter of application, time or understanding? (competence). Are we taking away the students opportunity to correct their own mistake and take responsibility for their own tennis and their own learning? (autonomy). Are we being too fussy and not working towards the player’s wants and needs, and is what we are working on aligned to clear goals which the player owns and which are agreed between player and coach? (purpose)
It is worth pointing out that this article focusses on technical aspects of the game, and that we recognise that flaws could also be personality traits or psychological/mental weaknesses which can have an adverse effect on the player’s training or competitive mind, decision making or attitudes to the events which occur in matches or the life of a tennis player.
Examples of a flaw
- A fundamental breakdown due to lack of physical, coordinative or technical efficiency, which if uncorrected, is likely to remain or even become worse over time. It could lead to injury or to a permanent weakness in the player’s game. A flaw is likely to need the intervention of an expert (coach) to correct it
- Lack of motor skills competence
- Over complicated swing
- Unnecessary movements in the swing
- Lack of adaptability
- Lack of coordination in the kinetic chain
- Grips
Examples of a mistake
- A mistake could be a one off, a temporary or a permanent feature of a player’s game, which could be a wrong decision in the heat of the moment, or due to a more fundamental lack of understanding by the player
- Lack of ownership
- Not enough repetition of the skill
- Not understanding the purpose of the exercise
- Misjudgment of the situation or shot
- Concentration
- Tiredness
Flaws are often quite easy to spot if you know your player well, or if you regularly analyse or chart their matches, because it is likely that a pattern of evidence will emerge over time which becomes a feature of their game. For example, analysis might show a weakness in consistency or effectiveness due to an extreme grip when a player is forced out wide on the forehand. Evidence will probably show a higher than expected number of lost points resulting from that shot. Such a flaw can sometimes be predicted by others, including the opponent! Mistakes, however, are less likely to show in a pattern, are more likely to be random and cannot be predicted, to such an extent that we sometimes hear advice suggesting that the player should wait for a mistake.
So now that we understand the difference, what do we do about them? How can we train in such a way to reduce mistakes or flaws in a game?
What recommendations can we make in coach behavior best deal with mistakes and flaws?
Coaches can help players understand and deal with mistakes in training by:
1. Understanding if it really is a mistake or a flaw!
2. Understanding that mistakes happen. Even the pros make them, and no child should ever be criticised for making mistakes. However, it is important to understand why mistakes happen, and to help players become resilient to the challenges of competitive tennis so that they make fewer mistakes as they gain experience. Make sure that parents of your young players understand this too!
3. Encouraging players to try to play their best and to try to win, rather to try not to lose. By being brave and by trying new things, players develop their game skills, learn more about themselves and their game, and eventually accept mistakes as part of learning. Better to try and fail than not to try at all!
4. Practising decision making in training. Start with simple either/or choices with young children, and gradually extend the range of options as players gain experience. Challenge and discuss decisions players make in training, not only when they make wrong decisions but also when they make right decisions, so that they can talk about their decisions
5. Develop little routines to deal with mistakes on court. The key is acceptance, not to dwell on the mistake and to move on quickly
Coaches can help eradicate flaws in training by:
1. Understanding if it really is a flaw or a mistake!
2. Watching players in matches. Many flaws may not come out until players are under competitive pressure
3. Have a clear analysis checklist so that you can go through a clear process to understand why the flaw exists, and to avoid reacting randomly to every error which happens. Remember that flaws aren’t just technical, and many technical flaws could originate in the incoming ball and not necessarily with the outgoing ball
4. Video analysis. As players improve it can become hard to see the little details
5. Getting a second opinion. Do you know another coach whom you trust and who can maybe cast their eye over your player. It can be really helpful to get a second opinion when you aren’t 100% sure of something

Novak Djokovic: Inside Djoker - making the case for the GOAT

Goat Debate Djoker

He is within striking distance of passing Fed but I suggest we wait.  Things happen like injuries, new faces on the scene, and resurgent other players like Fed and Rafa.  Still, it is arguable that Novak has what it takes to gain that crown but again who really owns it depends on how you define it.  Rod Laver still holds the honors for  two calendar year Grand Slams and no one has come close on the men's side to challenge it.  Yes, he doesn't have as many total slam event wins but he was also prevented from competing for them for almost a decade in the 60's when he turned professional and was prohibited from playing the then Amateur events that are the slams.  Fate cost the Rocket, Rod Laver, many more wins most likely and something no one expects can do the same for Novak.

Why Novak can be called the GOAT - Substance over style

Again, we'll see.  All in good time.  If you notice the writers mention Laver arena more than they mention Laver himself.   It always comes to the mind that whomever is around when you're around, they are he best ever .   Current writers tend to forget what it took for Laver to accomplish what he did against competition ever bit as strong as the current crop relative to the game as it was played back then.  He did this against Ken Rosewall,  Roy Emerson,  Fred Stolle,  Tony Roche, and and strong and deep source of talent from Australia alone much less worldwide.   Laver passed the baton to Federer when it became obvious to him that Fed was a magical talent and his total wins proved it.  So maybe this will happen again is someone passes Fed or maybe we should just restart the argument about what we are measuring.

Why Novak can Emulate Rod Laver

It will be impressive if he can do that but can he do it twice.

Young Rivals Expose his weakness - reliance on the backhand

Every player has a relative weakness compared to their strengths.  Most players would happily take Novak's forehand compared to their own.

Retirement - Tennis Teacher Style

Why Americans can't expect a comfortable retirement anymore

Think about how you will take care of yourself as your body ages from years of hard work on the court.

Have enough savings that you can handle your minimal expenses.  Live inexpensively, and make sure your home is paid off while you have no debt.

Tennis players as a group tend to be healthier but things happen as you age that have no bearing on how well you took care of yourself.  Make sure you're insured against catastrophic medical events and disability.  If your income is low enough you might be eligible for Medicaid and if not you might wait to fully retire when you turn 65 so that you'll have 80% of your medical expenses covered and you'll have to insure the rest.  If you're a Veteran see if you can use the VA medical system for your regular visits, care, and prescriptions.

If you're healthy enough see if you can keep teaching at least a bit until you can no longer do so.  It can help you earn an income and also keep you socially involved.  Volunteer if you don't need the money.

Nadal Forehand Around the Net

Don't try this at home.

Actually, if you practice doing it by doing drop and hit drills when the moment arrives you at least will have an idea of how to do it.

Bring a basket over wide out of court on the forehand size and self toss the ball so that you can hit forehands and focus on the target and don't worry about the net any longer since it's no longer an obstacle if you're far enough wide.

This of course would cost the medical establishment money so it explains why it isn't being pursued rapidly.  It's better to spend billions on cancer research and little on early detection and prevention.  Dogs could save many lives.

This is a great win for Stefanos and sadly another reminder that Fed is slowly but eventually losing his awesome powers of domination on the tennis court.    I still hope to see him take another Grand Slam event but what he has already done is hard to believe were it not witnessed by all of us.

He still looks good for it because of his history for doing well in the big ones, but the changing of the guard is in progress.

It is now the Big3 with Murray gone and may be the Big 2 if Rafa steps aside for injuries as well.  Fed can't be long behind them.   I give Novak the best chance of staying in past all of them barring further injuries.

Metal Rackets from the Old Days, All Pro Racket - Steel 1960's

Whenever you think that you're stuck playing with a racket that is hurting your game just remember that you could be trying to hit a topspin drive with this war club.  It weighs 13.0 oz. making it one of the lighter ones among the six shown.

Imagine an all steel welded frame that is strong enough to use as a pry bar or shovel.  Seriously off center hits would send shockwaves up your arm or cause the frame to spin in your hand.  Yet when serving a flat serve this racket along with a whole generation of aluminum and steel frames gave you what we used to call a cannonball serve.

As a self defense tool this has no equal for the combination of concealment by function and being seriously dangerous.  I used to keep one in the car in the place of a nightstick.  In a snowstorm if you had one of these handy and not a shovel you could use it for one especially if you had a cover on it.

The grip sizes on these frames always seemed too large.  One major benefit of tubular frames is no wind resistance that translates into more racket head speed.  Add this to the tennis museum for evolution of tennis rackets.

From Left to right; Rawlings Steel - 13.4 oz, Tensor Aluminum 13.2 oz, Tensor Pro Steel 13.8 oz, High Skore  Aluminum 13.O oz, and the Chemold Aluminum 13.7 oz.

As you can see these things all have much more weight to them than most rackets made today.  Even the heaviest rackets of today top out at 12 ounces or less.  The one thing in favor of all of these frames was the improved wind resistance most had over wood frames of the time.  As you can also notice the racket head size was close to 85 square inches.

Aging Well - Happiness and a Positive Attitude

Aging well and living longer requires a positive attitude according to study

I swear that I've read just the opposite just a few months ago.  People who are the most irritable seem to hang around a long time so I question these surveys.

Aside from that there is a question of quality life and having meaning in your life. to make living longer worthwhile.  This is where I can agree with this study.

Find a purpose.  If that purpose is to have fun with friends on a doubles court or to teach kids the game you will accomplish a lot for the future as well.

Diet: Low carb or low fat? Who knows!

Low carb or low fat

After all of these decades of so called expert advice it seems they, the experts, don't know.  For a while it was carb loading, then get rid of gluten, low fat diets, high protein diets, and a long list that now includes a paleo diet.  Who knows?  It appears the experts don't agree either.

It is clear that if you subsist on carbs mostly that it usually adds fat to the waistline.  Excessive carb intake has many negative effects and conversion to sugar in the system of one of them.

Excessive fat intake has its own worries.  This was part of the Atkins diet that was high in fat and protein.

Heavy protein intake also creates issues for many people.

With all of this in mind it seems that a balanced diet still makes sense.
