Tennis News: Kvitova wins Qatar, Fed 97th title

Kvitova wins Qatar

Fed 97th Title

Gardnar Mulloy Remembered

1913 - 2016

He was an original Tennis Lifer.  He lived for the sport.

I didn't hear about his death in 2016 and today just did a quick name search to see how he was doing.  The last I had heard about him was that he was still playing senior tennis matches into his 90's.  This is a great feat considering how long ago he had played his best tennis reaching the finals of a number of Grand slams as a singles and doubles player.  His highest US ranking was number one with a world ranking of number 6.

Roger Federer - Oldest Number One

Fed to hold off Nadal for a long time - Beats Dimitrov to win Rotterdam

He has set the bar very high for everyone and especially his closest rival Nadal.  Congratulations to Roger Federer.  I hope Nadal comes back from injury soon to keep them out there as long as possible.

Eye Injuries in Tennis

Goffin retires in match after freak eye injury

This can be a dangerous type of injury.  I have heard of detached retina's from this type of strike on the eye.  From experience I know that most tennis balls cause abrasion injuries rather than impact on the eye.  But the traumatic injuries that can occur do suggest some precautions.

I will tell you that many players have taken a hit off another players racket in front of them and also off their own frames.   I've had both in over 50 years of tennis participation.   It is a rare occurrence but Murphy's law says that the ball will look for your eye every time.  A strike from a very fast incoming ball do a lot of damage even though the ball doesn't fit well in the socket like a racketball.   It can cause enough trauma to easily give you temporary blurriness justifying an eye exam.

Just last week I saw a young girl in a clinic chatting at the curtain behind the court and not paying attention to the play in front of her as she waited her turn and a very fast groundstroke got through and hit her in the eye.  Fortunately, she was is fine and it only caused her discomfort, but it could have been tragic.  The risk exists so paying attention when you're out there near flying balls is very important.

Eye Protection:

If you need vision correction then you have the option of wearing some prescription lens sport glasses with frames that will help protect your eyes.  Make sure both the lenses and frame are well designed for eye protection.

Sunglasses are also a source of protection not just from the sun but from misdirected balls heading for your eyes.  I wear them whenever the sun is out and it's a bright day.  Indoors you have no choice but to go without sunglasses but you can still have clear protective lenses.

Safety Precautions:

Don't look back at your partner when they are serving.  Don't play close to the net if you can't handle the speed of your opponent's shots.  Turn around if you're facing an overhead smash and you're in the front court area and don't have time to retreat or exit the court.

In practice environments it is helpful to limit the ball speed if there are more than two people on the court.  Especially in tennis classes it is imperative to control the ball speed so that out of control shots don't hit someone else that is focused on their own game.

How to hot get hit in the face with a wild ball:

In any situation when the ball is flying out of control toward other players it is good to give a warning by yelling watch out, incoming, or the person's name and watch out.  I always tell students not to look around to see where it's coming from but to face away from the court and down.   If you want to hold your racket up behind your head or over it depending on where it is expected to visit you from it may deflect a strike.  Looking around or up almost guarantees that Murphy's law will come into play and you'll take a hit.

Health: Cleaning Product Risk, Conventional Treatment Risks, Diet and Fitness

Equal to 20 cigarettes a day

I use vinegar for the countertops and a mild mixture of tea tree oil (1 drop per quart) and water for floors.  Anyone that has been exposed to certain household cleaners and had severe reactions knows that it might be best to find alternatives.

For instance, rather than using chemical that have VOC (volatile organic compounds) that permeate the air you breathe it makes more sense to use natural items that don't or actual mechanical cleaners like pumice or even abrasive pads.  I've even found the bleach coated pads now sold are great for removing stains after the surface material has been taken down by eraser type sticks of pumice.  Of course each surface is different so test a small area not visible with each item to avoid damaging a surface.

If you're an athlete then caring for your lungs is a big part of staying fit and avoid chemical odors such as paint fumes, toxic cleaning chemical fumes, and even car exhaust can reduce your risk.  We already know that smoking is a no no for top performance and long term health.  Add these other risks to the list.

Can Conventional Medicine Be Trusted

Remember to look at the profit motive behind anything you are offered as treatment.  I always worry when a doctor seems to want to sell something right out of their office such as vitamins etc.

Diet and Fitness
Go with less processing whenever possible.

What Color is a Tennis Ball

Half thinks green

When I started playing tennis they were white.  In the 1970's we started seeing what were called optic yellow tennis balls.  Before long there was no other choice as white balls disappeared.  Now I hear you can still get them but they're more expensive and pink balls are around as well.  There probably is an element of green in them but yellow is what they were called back when they were introduced.

Health: Processed Foods - Cancer, Flu Vaccine

Cancer rates up with processed foods - Energy Bars, Chocolate, Cereal, Sausage

This follows the line that the closer you can get to nature on food production then you are probably better off.  Of course contaminants are the one thing that is hard to avoid with agriculture focused on high yield through chemicals.  Once grown the follow up processing and use of synthetic materials only makes things less nutritious and further removed from food that the human body was used to consuming.

Vaccine 36% effective this year, 60% normally

Fed in Rotterdam

If he wins there he'll deserve the number one spot.  It would be an amazing feat.

Sports Not War

Make Sports Not War

This is a noble idea and that is the idea of the Olympics.  This is why all sports competition should be seen as a great substitute for conflict where the winner and loser shake hands rather than risk their lives.

It's great that tennis was added to the Olympics summer games.

Tennis Wear and Tear: Playing Pro life is hard, Teaching Pro Life can be Hard

Toni speaks of the wear and tear of Pro tennis
Their careers won't go forever.

Teaching pro Life:  Find ways early to avoid the hard workouts.  I know it's fun to get paid to play, but think of the long term.  Focus on groups when you can.  Feed from the service line or net when applicable and don't run down balls unless required.

Keep your on court teaching hours down to 30 a week if you can, but I know you'll want to earn so at least spread it out.
